Leos vs BDs Hybrid or Not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whether or not BDs will be scientifically proven to be a seperate species over time remains to be seen,i personally believe they are the same just a regional variant collected from Sao felix. However i also believe the name Black diamond is a good one to describe these Leo's which have superior spotting and generally whiter ones also, like i said before,i agree with Shadow on taking a big spot classic over a messy BD,however they are not all messy, there are top grade BDs like there are top examples of all rays, these deservedly fetch more money and are the most striking rays on the planet, unfortunately few of us can afford such quality.

No, they are not all messy some are beautiful. But I have to question a few of the newer captive bred BDs on whether they are being created through Hybridization and line breeding with top of the line huge spotted Hens.

"Crossing" a male BD with a normal leo female makes a huge diffence.Lode´s pups are living proof of this!

Genetically they are the same. I've had pups that are what the pet trade would call "BD" from pure leo/leo parts. BD's are just a type of spot pattern.

Not 100%.

Thats why a BD looks so diffrent from a normal leo (+ all BD´s come from the area around sao felix).

I think they can be compared to geophagus altifrons wich vary in colour depedning on the river.

Potamotrygon leopoldi "sao felix" would make sense.

Also, normal leos dont have belly spotting. That is a unique genetic sao felix trait.

anders have you done any genetic testing in denmark??
just wondering because i beleive zoodiver is a marine biologist and
anders what would explain pairs of normal leos producing bd grade pups?

bd is from different location that looks nicer! the hobby has turned it into a grade of leo! whos to say all bds are nice? they are the same ray bdxleo is leoxleo so how can it be hybrid? fish around the world let alone the amazon vary by location with in the same genetics.im an avid fisherman anders i know of studies our government has done on fish, in different regions of our country.rainbow trout in british columbia get twice the size and look alot nicer than they do in alberta.but they are 100% the same fish genetically and 1200km away in complete different bodies of non connected waters? but i also realize their not rays from brazil i maybe ignorant that way but i would love to hear about any fullproof 100% genetic tests that have been done you may know of?

wait a few years and their will be another grade of something!
