I went to the local fish store yesterday and found something I had wanted to get for a while but had never seen locally. I found a Leporinus I have seen them on web sites but did not want to spend the money for shipping and from what I have read they can be a tricky fish. The guy at the fish sore said that it is the only fish that can be kept with piranha. So I decided to put it in my 220 gallon Exodon tank. At the moment I only have 7 Exodons but want to breed them so I have more. If I thought it was going to be fine I would put it in my 625 gallon community tank but have so many fish in it by the time that i notice fish missing it will be too late :-)

He also had a baby Tigerfish but it had just died that day so thankfully I was not able to get it to. I need to work on breeding feeder fish before getting any real monsters.

I forgot a picture.

Lol @ the LFS saying "the only fish that can be kept with piranha". Nothing can be kept safely with piranha, not sure why this species would be any better suited to avoid being bit in half.

I love these fish though, very nice coloring on him. I'd watch it in the exodon tank, they're nasty and could potentially harass the leporinus pretty badly. Just keep an eye on him in there, as I have seen a few successful exodon cohabs. Keep us updated when this guy gets bigger, I think they max out close to a foot long and get very nice looking.

I have seen a tank that had a bunch of big black piranha and exodons in it. I was also told that if you keep exodons with red belle piranha the exodons will bully the piranha. At the moment my leporinus is smaller then my exodons and they are getting along.

Well things are going well. After I had taken the exodons out of my community tank they had been a little sluggish with no one to chase around. The Leporinus holds is own against them and they get along really well.

Just wait till the leporinus fights back one day....

Every one is getting along really well. The LFS has some more Leporinus so I was thinking about getting 2 more to have a group of 3 but need to google if they will get along in that size of group.

Anyone else hear of these guys biting eyes off when bigger? I'd like to know if that's a rumor or not

Good luck! Keep an eye on the scales exodons eat scales off fish too
