i love the look of banded leporinus, and am considering either 1 or a trio with my 2 oscars. will they be ok as ive read they really like to bite fins.

Oscars like to bite fins too... If you feel the Leporinus can hold his own against Oscars then it should be ok. The idea is, if it can fit in an Oscars mouth, it will.

yes thats what i thought, i didnt know oscars were fin nippers! i will have a think about it, ive only seen them at around 3-4" long and i think my O's would enjoy them as a snack

ive kept the two together for years with no problems whatsoever, leporinus are nippy with other more docile fish but worked fantastic with my oscars, red devil, argentea, kk parrot, pike, montaguensis GT, black belt and lemon fin barbs (all kept together with no problems for over 2 years in a 230 imp gal tank !

thanks for that, good to know. one day im hoping to get a larger tank for a few lemon fin barbs, they are beautiful.

are leporinus better off singles or as a group?

your welcome ! i honestly think they are best kept single as the seem to nip on the smallest of the group ! i work in the trade and have heard nothing good to keeping these guys in pairs or even groups and from experience of putting two together in the shop (major fail) they had to be seperated the next day as the slightly larger one battered the smaller overnight ! just keep in mind these guys grow to 12" quickly and need loads of space as they are fast active fish!
good luck :) im sure it will add some colour and movement to your aquarium !!

single one it is then :) thank you
