leptobarbus hoevenii AKA Sultan Fish

I was in my LFS recently and i saw a barb that looked pretty interesting. It had a common name of "red finned golden shark" so i looked it up and it was really the Sultan fish or leptobarbus hoevenii.

I picked up 7 of them and they look amazing as adults. Are these guys rare? i have never seen them before and i am all into asian barbs.

they are pretty common in my area. the only reason I don't have a few in my 150g is that I have seen a few 18" ones at my LFS, and they apparently get bigger than that.

they are beautiful fish though. I really love their colours.

Great find. They do grow very fast (added 10" in 6 months) and need a lot of swimming space. Mine tend to get a little rowdy and use all of the 750. Enjoy.

Yes, mine is a little pushy, he nudges my chalceus and arowana around a fair bit. No outright nipping, but he bugs them, and eventually the aro will turn around and snap at him. I'm told their growth slows once they pass 1', and that 18" is pretty much the max for tank-raised fish. Cool fish, though I'm selling mine as I think it will eventually outgrow the tank (170G).

Never heard the sultan fish name before...add that to red finned cigar shark and mad barb. Common names are fun...

As someone mentioned, mad barb and cigar shark seems to be a more "common" common name. Hope you have a big tank for 7 of these guys when they grow some more. Cool fish though, but not rare here in the UK either.

yeah, not rare but sort of hard to find in south arizona in the desert, my single fish in with tinfoils, balas, one pacu, one oscar, 3 black bar silver dollars is a full foot long now, or maybe 13 inches, hes turning into a lunker.....hehehe. He does not bother anyone in the tank

Where do you get them from?

well go or call your local pet shop that has a good fish supply and ask if they have one or can get one. I got mine online cause in s. Arizona in the desert they are hard to find
