Leptobarbus Hoevenii "Mad Barb" "Golden Shark"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gets up to 40" long, is an active swimmer and lives in shoals. For comps, a shoal of these in a 8'x3', is comparable to a shoal of tinfoils in a 20L. At 29" (which I believe are the ones in the pics below), they weigh in around 17+ lbs, so 3 @ 29" would require around 1/2 lbs of pellets (or equivalent) per day to cover 1% of body weight. A single full grown one would weigh around 40-45 lbs and obviously consume far more.

Personally speaking, I like the tinfoil look a bit more and find it more colorful. Full grown in a tank, a shoal of these must indeed be an awesome sight.
Thanks for those pics...I knew they got over 20 inches but I was afraid to post it. Alot of times people don't believe how big some fish can get....just because they haven't personally seen it. (ex. Pacu get much bigger then 36 inches).

Guess I'll take them back

Have 2 at the aquarium around 24+

I have a little one at home who has grown to 6-7" in 2 months, cool fish has to be one of the best to watch cruise the tank.

Down here we call them cigar sharks / barbs though or is a completely different fish ? looks the same.

Cigar Shark is also a name for them here.
