Can anyone steer me in the right direction. Im trying to help another member whos been a little too busy with work obligations to post himself. The fish pictured isnt mine.

I dont know if the lesions and white patches are related or two seperate issues. Could this be septicemia? If so would furan 2 be the best course of treatment ?

He went away for a week or so. During that time he lost a dat. Water probably went to crap as the fish wasnt removed. Theres 5 other bichirs in the tank. All display theses symptoms except for two but that might be because he hasnt noticed the beginnings of what ever this is.

He also reports the lesions come and go.

Septicemia (viral) is usually brought into a tank by feeder fish, like wild caught minnows.
Are these fish (or has the Dat) been fed feeder fish?
Is septicemia a factor in your area?
As a fishes immune system works it is possible to see it come and go, but if there are a number of infected fish in the confines of a tank, and as they are weakened, reinfection is common.

It does look like septicemia. This can be induced from sick fish or bad water. Like Duane’s mentioned. It does kind of look like what’s expected in Polys with septicemia but a little off. White spots look like broken/missing scales and fungus.

What are the tankmates? Spiny catfish or plecos?

Would move to a qt tank and treat with clean water salt and maracyn2.

No feeder fish. No knowledge regarding if its common in the area.

Why maracyn 2 over furan 2 ?

Both treat gram negative and positive bacteria. Are the active ingredients in maracyn 2 more effective ?

Learn something new every day. I wss unaware that septicemia could come and go

Have similar coverage. Can use either one. Seems to work better with polys when used. Just from experience.

Some fish can be asymptomatic (carriers like Typhoid Mary) and do not get the disease, but are able to pass it on, so it could have been brought in by the latest acquisition, or if fish are fed infected fish meat (even from a grocery store (the virus can reappear after being frozen)) it thrives in low temp water. It does not infect people.
It has been detected in NY, from the St Lawrence Seaway into the Great Lakes, can be carried on nets, boots, boat hulls, plants, by birds.
Since it is a virus, most treatment are useless.

Wow so theres a chance these fish are goners ? Are we talking euthanasia?

I think he has furan 2 on hand.

He says that he does notice bloody streaks near the fins that come and go.

Would that be an indication if its bacterial or viral ?

I'm sorry to hear this. If it is Septicemia, it is a monster of a disease. I lost 75% of my stock to it years ago and ended up putting euthanizing the remaining 25%. The mortality rate is extremely high. Start the strongest meds as possible, as early as possible, don't wait. If this person waits, they will lose the stock and likely more.

Make sure you don't have any possible contaminants to your own stock, jaws. I would hate to see you hit with this disease.
