Lesions/Ulcers on Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is very potent dose on the low side 250 mg per 10 gallons, if you are going to use it. Be careful and treat in a hospital tank if possible.

Definitely will use in a 20G hospital tank. Thanks. Any ideas on how long to treat for? With the limited info I have it seems leaving the drug in the water for three days, and then a large water change and retreat again for another three days? Not much info on this out there. Any suggestions length of time to dose?

I apologize if I missed it in the thread, but did you use the nitro/kana combo?

No problem at all. Yes I have in the past, but not this time. I've used that combo for 10 days twice in the past (looking at my records) and the affliction eventually returns months later. It seems to help clear the infection only temporarily like most treatments I've tried. This time was minocycline, then 48 hour break, and then oxytetracycline pellets with Neomycin in the water for a week.

Trying to gather info on the Chloramphenicol should I decide to try that.

hmm...well Toms the expert here but my 2 cents is if that didn't work, you either have a gram positive bacterial infection or a virus as already stated. I'm also guessing you used most of the medications geared towards both types of bacteria already though?

Yes I've tried most of the medications that have been known to successfully treat this with the exception of the Chloramphenicol. Currenty Neomycin in the water and OxyT in the feed. Koi guys seem to have success with those two if this is Furunculosis. Should I try the Chloramphencol and fail there I'd probably give up, but maybe not. ;)

I can't believe nothing had an effect other than reducing the swelling of the sores...that's a tough infection.

I've never seen anything like it and most aquarists I've spoken to haven't, either. The sores do heal over, but there is always a hint of scarring like the sore near the dorsal. The other two areas will heal over so they will also look like the top sore. There always seems to be a bit of 'puffiness' even when he's all healed up though.

Maybe this would require a longer a 20 or 30 day kanamycin/nitro treatment? I'm almost out of ideas.

This is the fish today.

That's what I was going to suggest was a prolonged treatment. I dealt with something similar on my pickerels. They would get these lesions on their bodies, which would swell and break the scales apart slightly, then they would get cottony fungus in the sores which then spread to the fins and other parts of the fish. Same outcome with multiple meds as well, everything would subside, except you could see a hint of where the lesions used to be. I tried everything under the sun, for 6 months I dealt with the problem. I had used kana/nitro which provided the quickest, longest lasting results, then resorted to 4x strength meth. blue and salt dips which worked even better, then when it came back the next time I was determined to kill the bacteria or the fish lol I did 1.5x dosage of maracyn 2 in a QT tank for 2 months straight. The fish survived and the infection finally stayed away for good.

Very interesting. Nice job! Maybe that is what it will take. I don't give up easily and I'm down to give it a shot. Kill the bug or kill the fish. lol Yeah it may come to that.

I forgot to mention I gave the fish 3 30 minute baths in potassium permanganate solution the past 5 days as well.

So as of now my plan is:

1)Finish out the neomycin and oxy treatment
2)Give the fish 48 hours of clean water
3)Treat with the Chloramphenical for ? days
4)Give the fish time in unmedicated water
5)Depending on the Chloramphenocol results, would potentially treat the fish for ~30 days with Kanamycin or possibly Kana/Nitro combo again. Though an antibiotic that would last longer in the water would be much easier - so may not go with Kanamycin. Minocycline didn't seem to be effective with this, but is tough to tell as the ulcers heal slowly.
6) Get some Baytril/Enrofloxacin and inject the fish with that.
7) Find another hobby. :)
