Hiya

We have a nitrate probelm...can anyone help? Our tank is 7ft by 2.5ft by 2ft and we have 3 filters which will turn over 900 ltrs. we have done 3 tank changes in the last 3 days and cleaned the filters out, we have only had our two red tailed catfishes in for 2 weeks and nitrate is too high. We have coral sand on the base about 5mm deep. Does anyone know how we can bring the nitrate level down?
Also one of our catfish has damaged its peptoral fin whereby the end part of the bone has separated from the fin by approx 2mm, we have put in antibacterial lotion to keep fungus at bay - will this heal?

Depending on how you cleaned the filter, that could be your problem. Is this an established tank? If it was, adding two RTC's could have spiked a massive bio load in you tank and it's probably goung through a partial cycle again due to the increase. Just keep an eye on the water chemistry and do daily water changes of about 10% until it stabilizes. Also maybe comb through that sand and make sure that there aren't any pockets of rotting food or anything burried that might be upsetting your water chemistry.

Actually at that size their colors will change greatly, it's diet should be as varied as you can make it, what your feeding though is fine and will be great for it's color long term ;)

Good lookin little guy you got there :D

okay so for a nice white black and red what should i feed it??

Thats the cutest little guy I've ever seen. I'll have to buy one around that size when I get things set up. I love how even at that small of a size, they have no fear to handfeeding. Looks like hes been doing a whole lot of eating.

You might try: 1. Stop feeding the fish for a few days
2. Do partial water changes each day of about 20%
3. Put a couple of large airstones in the tank that are working right to the bottom of the tank.

These 3 things have always worked for me to lower nitrate levels. After it sorts out I suggest to leave the airstones in forever.

As far as treating the cats for fungus go easy on the meds. They often kill more catfish than they cure.

How big are the Phractocephalus hemioliopterus ?

The RTC and TSN are really nice and cool fish and I really want to get both of them but sadly they are ILLEGAL in Hawaii :( :( :(
