The deep south
friend of mine dropped off 5 rays yesterday 4"-8" for me to babysit as hes going out of the country for a cple months. Its pretty early to call anything yet after 24hrs but my instincts tell me something is not right with these guys. One of the rays seems to have bloat (not in the normal "back fat" area but on the sides of her disc around the rib cage area). A couple have white spots/patches/discoloration... and they all seem to be very lethargic, sitting in the corners oddly half up on the glass and breathing heavy in general for their lack of movement. So far ive added some regular solar salt but not sure what 2 throw at them moving forward. Should i treat them with a round of Prazi? or do u guys recommend another general treatment.

my system is on autodrip and 2 of my own 12-14" rays came out of the tank an hr before the the others went in. both of my own rays from the said system are/were in top notch shape and in this system trouble free for 8 months. They ate same day they were moved into different tanks and i do not suspect there is a water quality issue as the ray with bloat clearly came in that way with what the owner said was a "fungus"...

im suspecting gill flukes or parasites. any tips on meds and how 2 move forward is much appreciated... dont want my friend 2 lose all his fish and i dont want future problems 2 pop up again in one of my best systems after their alloted time with me. I have 10 other rays in house and have never seen anything like this with my own stock. Dont want 2 bomb them right away, nothing on hand but salt so any treatment will be in around a week when i can get something ordered/delivered. no real stores in my area sadly. Thanks in advance for any help!

Are they showing interest in food? Pretty sure all his rays are captive bred right? So I wouldn't suspect parasites right away. I wouldn't add anything else yet just keep the water as pristine as possible and the tank dark. I'm sure they are stressed from transport but the bloat issue is worrisome. Good luck with them

I believe keepinfish keepinfish had the bloat issue with his p14 and john C john C also posted a picture of a marble pup he had with similar symptoms.

I'll parrot some of the normal stuff. No lights on the tank, in my experience overpowering lights sort of restart a comfort timer. I would offer earthworms after dark. I would use a weak flashlight and set it up 1+ feet above or away from the tank to give it some light, I'd set it up 15-30 min before I feed. If you have a weak light in the room it will probably be sufficient, but you only need to see them well enough to drop worms on there face and see the reaction.

I would make sure that temps are consistent, even if it meant turning the drip off. At this stage swinging temps, in my opinion, are not conducive to getting these guys comfortable. I wouldn't let it fluctuate more than a couple degrees. I'm not sure what temp is ideal here, treatment is not one of my expertise for sure. Removing anything unnecessary like carbon might be ideal, I'm the kind of guy who wants to eliminate any potential problems even if they seem silly. Good luck and keep us updated, did these guys have a rough move at all?

Any luck with these guys?

yup :) ... my paranoia usually gets the best of me lol... 3/5 ate pellets/tilapia lastnight after 3 days so not too shabby. all males. 2 fems i hope bite within the next cple days. i raised the temp for them, added more air stones and am still keeping the lights dimmed down to keep em comfortable. As for the one female with bloat, it seems to have subsided a bit but ill be keeping a close eye one her. ill continue with solar salt to help her pass whatevers in her... if that doesnt work ill try some epsom salts. bit of relief for now, 2 more to work with still.

Usually one good sign is a bright future in these scenarios. By having most of them eat you've almost confirmed water quality and care in my eyes. I'm happy to hear they are doing better.

I'm always nervous about my rays, new arrivals are worse so I can't even imagine caring for someone else's. If they fast towards a week I'd offer earthworms, in my experience they are unparalleled for breaking rays.

You, overly worried? You are usually the calming voice of reason, if you get "paranoid" what chance do the rest of us have lol?
