Plant Name: Water Wheel Plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa)
Difficultly: Hard
Water Temp: 80 to 40 degrees
Lightning: Lightning strikes may be harmfully (squints)
Lighting: Medium light
Water: Prefers slightly acidic water
Additional info: Grows best in 30 gallon tubs or aquariums with 3 inches of 3 parts peat to 1 part clay as a substrate with a layer of gravel to hold the substrate down. Needs a bit of carbon dioxide which it gets from the peat breaking down and other plants.

Other: Requires to be fed with tiny water creatures like mosquito larvae.

I’m hoping to get some water wheels soon so I don’t have photos but I can describe it. The water wheel is a green free floating plant, that looks like a ropey fuzzy caterpillar that is a 1/2 inch in diameter with trap bladders covering it. In Winter when it goes dormant it grows several balls that it grows from in Spring.

The Red Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea Zenkeri)



Origin: East Africa

Level of care: moderate

Temperature: 70-86 Fahrenheit

Size: up to 30 inches wide and 24 inches in height

Light: medium to high

Co2 requirement: not required but will help with growth rate

Special requirements : root tabs & iron (enhances redness) and lots of room

Tank placement: makes a great center piece

The following is not my photo and I have yet to experience this but propagation can occur from the center of a mature or dying leaf of this plant:


Extra information and photos: with its brilliant color and heart shaped leaves, this plant is actually a lily pad. If allowed to grow freely, shooters reach the surface and can deter lights from penetrating to plants below. Once at the surface, others will follow, therefore, it is best to keep plant low. Also a good idea to contain the roots as this plant can overtake any aquarium in time.

Great Idea Fat Homer

Plant Name: Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides)

Light Requirements: Low to Moderate

Care level: Easy

Co2: Not Required

Special Requirements: None, but will benefit from fertilizers.

Propogation: Any part of the plant can be cut off to create a new plant like other stem plants. When it gets to tall it will start to shoot out roots mid stem. When it does that’s when it’s time to propogate.

Growth Rate: Moderate to Fast depending on lighting and fertilizer.

Tank Placement: Mid to Background (can be grown floating)

Other notes: often confused with Water Wisteria. Can feed from the roots and the water column.
