let's compile the ultimate list of aquarium essentials.

Great thread! Most of my recent philosophy comes from the reefer's world. I believe that very similar biological things that occur in salt water occur in fresh water. Almost all of the important things happening in an aquarium are at the microbe level, ie, algae and bacteria. So, in my tanks I keep tons of lava type rock that has a lot more surface area for the microbes to grow just at the reef guys use "live" rock.

As long as the current isn't overwhelming the fish, there is no such thing as too much filtration. I know it's not natural, but for added water movement I use an air pump with no air stone so that water is also moved upward to the surface for added surface area and c02 expulsion.

I also think that lighting is very important. Although many fresh water habitats are shaded, they are still lit by the sun. So I think that within reason good quality lighting is essential.

By the same reasoning, live plants are not only good looking but also aid biological filtration.

In general if you look at rivers and lakes that have excellent water quality they are usually (but not always) low in nutrients. Crappy water has crappy microbes in it. I think thats why tanks with poor water quality have more bad bacteria and undesireable algae.

I am suprised that more fresh water tanks don't have sumps like the reef guys. My next tank will have the largest sump that I can fit so I can add even more bio filtration like an algae turf scrubber and or a protected area for plants.

Please keep in mind that the above is just my philosophy based on reading every piece of info I can find.

Oh btw I have always been partial to Marineland products with the exception of their stealth heaters.

Again, great thread! I hope this stirs up lots of debate about freshwater quality.

Thanks, mark

i've really taken to rena. i was using nothing but marineland before, and i still have the stealth (UHOH) heaters, but i am going to switch to hagen or rena heaters when i can. i was looking at the fluval fx5, but that thing is just terrible. too many knobs and clamps and hoses and you have to light an incense and say a prayer (?) before you turn it on after maintenance? weird. LOL

and i DO like a lot of API stuff, as well. i am using weco dechlor instead of prime atm, because it's cheaper. but the whole chloramine -> ammonia thing frightens me. dechlor doesn't neutralize ammonia or detox heavy metals. I just wish prime wasn't so expensive. (anything comparable that's less expensive?)

that's about all i got for now. some weird foreign guy wants the computer i'm on at school.

[ PS - i once saw a t-shirt with a drawing of a clown loach on it, and little lines under his fins so it looked like he was swimming (deetdeetdeet) like they do, and it said "just clownin' around" AND the clown loach had a little red clown nose on. so funny. i wish i could find it again :(

!!

That reminds me of this on a shirt:

huh? the fx5 has two hoses just like the rena and less hose clamps. how does it have too many?

1) Water conditioner - Tetra's aqua safe
2) Filter - currently 2 emperor 400 and 3 Eheim 2028 on my 100(2 of them are going on the bigger tank when I get it)
3) food - Hikari, NLS, San Francisco brand freeze dried. fresh veggies

Seachem Safe

A 4L jug of Seachem Prime will treat 80,000 gallons of chloramine treated tap water @ 2 mg/l chloramine.

A 4KG container of Seachem Safe will treat 400,000 gallons of chloramine treated tap water @ 2 mg/l chloramine, my current container of Safe cost me $72.99.

HTH

Depending on take size etc, even just checking out amazon.com with the prime shipping trial, you can get a 10?oz bottle of prime or amquel + for like 11 or 12 bucks. I would have bought it at my LFS, but $17 was a sticker shock.

how do you feel about aqueon products? stress coat instead of prime? reason i ask is because i can get a gallon of stress coat for 1499. (i bought a gallon of dechlor for like 9 bucks, but i DO wish i had a better water conditioner.) i personally have had excellent experience with other API products, but never tried their water conditioner.

i also feel that products like nutrafin cycle and stress-zyme are unnecessary. others swear by them. your thoughts?

well i finally returned my marineland stealth pro heaters - and by the way, based on how marineland has handled this ordeal - i will never give them my business again. (petsmart wouldn't replace my stealth heater, just the stealth pros)

i had a choice between fluval and aqueon pro. i feel like fluval is probably more reliable, but i didn't like that the m-series is not fully submersible, and it was glass (thought it looked like a higher-quality glass than say, the visi-therm or a penn-plax (LOL)) SO people are saying the aqueon pro is a repackaged stealth pro, but i don't agree! it's got an aluminum core - the SP didn't have that, if i recall (correct me if i'm wrong!) and looks all-around very sturdy and nice. they were on sale for about 32 dollars (the 200-250 models). i will report back after i get a really good look at them/test them.

PS - i just thought of something really important that i've been forgetting to talk about - thermometers! what do you guys like? i used to use those digital marina ones, but i wasn't happy with them. i've been using analog suction-cup style types.

http://www.bigalsonline.com/Fish_Te...ing-Glass-Thermometer_8509441_82.html?tc=fish this kind, though i have really ****ty vision, and no eye-care coverage, LOL, and so they are tough to read, and i've switched to (forgot brand, i think underwater treasure) it's a plastic rectangle with a thin glass tube embedded. i like the analogs a lot more, but i'd love to hear what everyone else uses.

sorry for the length!!

[side note : how do you guys feel about penn plax canisters? either way i'm sticking with rena - but just curious. (got my xp4 for 149 dollars through work!)]
