Let's Discuss Some CA Cichlids for Smaller Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aequidens coeruleopunctatus. Interesting........... I'm gonna do some research... man I love learning fish.

I'm leaning towards sajica and rainbows. They're both available locally so that is a plus. I might try them both in a 33 and see how they get along. Nanoluteus is really nice, but aren't around right now.
Panamesis are nice, but the colors don't really appeal to me. I like all cryptoheros.
I might just let the 20 be a fry growout tank for whatever. I have 3 pairs of CAs right now, two are proven breeders, and I also have dicrossus maculatus that spawned for the first time last week and my proven breeding group of corydoras. At this rate I'll need more small tanks! :nilly:

Cryptoheros nanoluteus or Heterotilapia multispinosa for the 20g long. IMO anything larger is going to look cramped in that tank.

This!!!

Or as you said, use it for fry.

Then I'd get the rainbows. I think they are more fun then Sajicas.

I'll probably see if both can work in a 33. Its a four foot tank so with decent aquascaping it should be fine. If not, I'll move one species around or sell it.

I'm going to suggest something not yet mentioned. Oblongums! They have good color, personality, don't get huge and you have likely never seen one in your lfs. Not nearly as aggressive or large as red ceibals.

Cool fish, but it's south american, not central.

Sounds great, I love both of those species. Watch out for aggression in the Sajica male. They can be pretty mean to their females. Good luck and keep us updated!!!

I really enjoy my pair of Rainbow Cichlids. I removed them from my community tank and gave them their own 75. I'm going to add a small school of barbs or something with them. Mine are not aggressive at all. They only show a little attitude when breeding but it's nothing compared to a pair of Convicts. They guard a small section and chase away any fish and quickly return to their eggs. They are also very active and colorful. I think you will enjoy them too.
