ok, im not sure if this is the right thread so feel free to move it.

I've been noticing a few threads here and there about the threat that is very real. About the depletion of fish in the ocean. Now i know that there are plenty of causes to stop this from happening, but why doesnt MFK have one. We have 60,000 members here. I know for a fact that most of us are willing to take a stand against the commercial fishing and netting. There are some here that are gathering data to take a stand. I say lets take a stand together. We know the threats of what can happen to our oceans, i want my children to one day be able to see a beautiful ocean full of life and not just my aquariums.

sometimes when im fishing for tuna some big traulers come and scoop up all the fish and were like wtf we were fishing there i hate commercial boats. I catch all the fish i eat and the rest i release

but, how do u suppose we go about doing this?

This is were we need to come together and figure something out. We are the BIGGEST fish keeping site on the net. I know that we can figure this out. Keep bumping this thing so everyone sees it.

I totaly agree with you man, I want to do somthing and after thinking about it for a min, it will never happen. It would have to be an international world wide commercial fishing regulation and enforcement that would have a bazzilion gajillion dollar price tag for it to be effective. On top of that it would cut off a LARGE chunk of many countries economies, as well as cut off a major food source supply. No government would actually enforce somthing that would help our cause when they have the food industry and fishemen's union ect. lobbying their reprisenatives with thousands and thousands of dollars in "contributions" each year to keep the laws lax on things of this nature. Depressing and sad, but its true.

you should def. pm neo about this one. and i do agree we should do something.

It doesnt have to be like that. We can make a change. Why do they have to take them out of the ocean? Why cant the farm raise them? Is it really that big of a stretch to do so?

And this just isnt about commercial fishing, its about everything that has to do with out hobby, including rivers lakes and streams.

Truthfully as a hobbiest I agree 100%.. and the steps I have taken is to try and breed/keep some of the more rare species. Unfortunately as pointed out above as far as the oceans and rivers go. It will take an international effort to preserve those waters. But in the meantime humanity will unfortunately need to learn it's lesson by loseing a majority of the species to really sink the message home. Captive breeding, and setting up Gentic diversity is something MFK members can certaintly accomplish. So that when the polotics are setttled. There will be fish available to re-introduce. And those species lost in the wild, will not be lost to the world.

The only thing I can see us as normal everyday people doing is to stop consuming anything that comes from the ocean.

I have a fish allergy so I have never consumed a single fish from the ocean. But i do feed shrimp to my puffer in the winter months only. When freshwater cray fish are not available.

If you stop buying the product then the market for that product crashes.

But getting everyone to do this will be impossible. IMO

I wish there was something to do but I am afraid there is not. Without scaling back our population and doing a severe trim on a already slim economy.

Some fish are being farmed in pen type enclosures in the ocean and beleive it or not the waste from those fish cause problems there.I read a rather frightening story on the whole overfishing situation in a issue of National Geographic magazine a while ago.
