2 inches in one month!!

acquired a florida exactly two months ago at 4", he's now 8". constant supply of feeders in a 15gal dimes 2'X1'X1', going into a ~60gal base area 33"X23" sometime next week.

it feels great to have gar again, had a couple beautiful floridas that were stolen a couple of years ago.

thats messed up. how did they steal your floridas?

i bought a gator gar a few wks ago. had him in a 55g to start and fed feeders constantly. i beilive he grew about 1.5" the first 2 wks and added a ton to his overall circumference. he's in a bigger tank now and its hard to measure him

I have some Shortnose gars, they've grown from 6-7" to 18" in 9 months. Not really crazy growth, i guess.

one of my classic "power-growth" stories from way back when (i keep them at more "normalized" rates now) - i had a YOY longnose gar grow from 3" to 10" in 21 days. constant supply of feeder rosies, temp 82F, and 50% water changes every 2-3 days.--

with little bit of negligence on my part. :( i have a pond in the front porch but was in the process of rehauling/mucking it out. three florida gars went into and were lost from a large tank seated outside of my house proper, outside of the gate. plus really i'm a saltwater guy, gars are THE freshwater fish for me. it was a real blow losing one of those fish, which i'd kept for almost three years and was a real wet pet. finally decided to get a new garfish early this year.
didnt mean to go on there, though.
oh, forgot to mention my water temps are usually pretty high. 28-31 deg celcius if you can believe it. toward the top end of that range if the tank is outdoors [my freshwater stuff usually is]
i'd like to hear accounts of young tropical or cuban or croc gar growth :naughty:

that's pretty radical growth! how unhealthy is it for the fish, if at all?

Thanks for all the stories!! :) Keep em' coming! :)
Where should i post this in order to get responses about other fish? Originally i was only interested in hearing about Gars, but now i want to hear them all lol

best i got was 1.5"~2" to 17" in less than a year. now the gar just has stagnated. just gaining wieght

Gator Gar went from about 10" to about 22" in a year.
In that same time frame he went through about 5 tanks...
First he was in a 20gal, then a 40, then a 57 corner, then a 75 then back to the 57 corner, then to the 125 and now in a 250.... for now :headbang2

But what is actually more suprising are these 2 little Florida Gars I got when they were BABIES. We call them the banditos cause their black stripe is very bold and they look like they are wearing little robber masks. When I got them they were honestly smaller than a pinky finger and thinner than pencil. I almost though they were too small to bring home. They couldn't even eat guppies I had to feed them baby ghost shrimp that you couldnt even see.
Now they are already eating full grown goldfish.
They went from smaller than pinky finger 2-3" to about 11-12" in about 7 months!

Gar Power!
