sportsmans paradise
ok so i went to the reptile show here this past sun and purchased a dwarf caiman (i dont want to hear about size and care, i know, i have done my research) brought him home set him up in a 40 breeder. he was not moving much but i figured give him a day to calm down from all the stress and he will be fine........i wake up th enext mornin to turn on my tank lights and say hello to my baby caiman and see this.....

the tank shot is of the day i brought him home
so i was extremely upset after seeing this, i wanted to call the guy i got it from but he just gave me an email :( so i had to wait till i got to work tues to email them. tues rolls around and it was a bigus email:swear::angryfire:wall:
i am so pissed off! so hear are my options....
1) try to figure out how to get ahold of these idiots and get either money back or another caiman
2) wait till the next show in november and confront them face to face
3) cut my losses and buy another one from a more reputable breeder
advice is apreciated guys
im really just confused on what to do.

yea its def dead.
it didnt look fat but none of them did. i just figured hatchlings usually didnt have thick tails. it had a fat belly and wide open eyes and would open its mouth if you got close to his face

Well, I would say try and get a refund, but NOT another specimen from then. After that, just play the waiting game until you are positive about the vendor and the specimens that are being offered.

What was the water temp? This particular Paleosuchus species doesn't do well when added to a tank containing warm water. It could have also been suffering from a bacterial infection which isn't uncommon.

yea i am goin to get a refund from them. i know a guy who is selling dwarf gators for half the price of the caiman so i will prob get that plus it would be alot more used to local weather and would be fine in an outdoor pond
sorry didnt see your viciuos, it was room temp water. it couldnt have been higher than 80. since i keep my place at 77-78

Dwarf Gators?

This is one of those unknown knowns that occur when dealing with living things in person - Once you leave the show, you're pretty much on your own........

Look at it from a Vendors perspective - You bring a healthy animal to a show, sell it, and it's dead a day later - There are about a million and one ways to kill an animal in that time frame, that have nothing to do with the vendor.......

It all comes down to the individuals terms of service, and usually when you deal in person, there are none..........I've been on both sides, and whenever I end up with someting dead, I suck it up and move on. I've had people cook animals in there Cars, then try to bring them back telling me it was my fault, along with a myriad of other excuses as to why they killed whatever they bought an hour earlier.......

Sometimes things just die......If it looked healthy at the show, then who knows? If it didn't look healthy, then you made a gamble and lost........Any herper that's done this for more than a few years has been in that position........

At the end of the day, these are living animals we deal with, and nothing is ever guaranteed in the game of life.......

ok but i did not bake him in the car i did nothing that would have caused him to die the next morning, i have spoken to a few breeders about this issue and they all say there is no reason if it was healthy when purchased that it should have died that quick. absolutely none (excluding baking in a car). and a respectable vendor would accept that i am not a novice reptile keeper and that his death was not caused by my actions. i understand there is no way he could have known there was somethin wrong with the animal but at least give people lagit contact info and back your animals. if you cant do that in this buisiness you will be out of buisiness. i can understad that they couldnt have known it was goin to die, but all i ask is for them to face the fact and accept that it was nothing i did to cause the animal to die and either refund my money or send me a replacement animal.

Man that sucks. Hope it gets sorted out. There doesnt appear to be any obvious thing wrong.

ps this is one of the reasons I really fear getting a hatchling. too many things can go wrong. just a few months old and they are much tougher. Im looking for one right about 14 to 18" for that reason.

I actually agree with Eric for once. I would try and talk to the vendor and see what you can get from him but don't expect anything. Also I would not get the dwarf gators, I saw that ad and the guy selling them seems like a prick and I did not get the impression that he knew what he was talking about either. If you want something to stay small perhaps you can look into gator farms near you (if there are any). I know that the ones down here will give you a small gator for a small price and you can exchange it for a smaller one when it starts getting bigger in a year or two. It may be worth looking into.
