Saw lots of set-ups with rays and bichirs with no substrate. Personally, i don't like substrate - too difficult to clean ... too difficult to see the fish.

But everyone's point is taken. though if i ever have rays again, i may consider some sand

yes, believe me. Its better for the ray. They use it mostly as place to hide.

Looks very nice.. are you using carbon in your filters? the head looks little dark.

no carbon in the filter mate. heads look dark? is it carbon-filter related?
