When using fake plants, I try to use them sparingly. Just a bit of green to add a bit of contrast to the rest of the scape. Also, try matching the size of plants/leaves to the size of the tank and fish. For example, a massive leafed plant is going to look out of place in a small tank filled with Tetras. I usually buy all of my fake plants from hobby stores instead of pet stores, as they usually have more realistic colored/textured plants.
