Let's see some Orbignyi pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey since we are all owners of orbs thought id ask the question, I purchased mine at about 8-10" disk so I dunno what they look like as pups. Saw a few in a store that were under 5-6" but the markings were very faint. Is this typical of orbs or sign of poor markings? My 6" mm has insane spots already so I figured the orb pups should have their pattern showing more at that size. Thanks

Mine were about 7 inches when I got them. Markings have certainly become more distinct over time.

On the hybrid earlier, the margins of the spots look more wavy than is typical for orbignyi. That is why I would think, hybrid. I have two motoro hybrid pups which look just like greyish motoros. If I didn't know their father because I bred them myself then I would say they are pure motoro. Some times the differences are subtle especially in apparently closely related species. Amazonian freshwater rays are after all very closely related genetically speaking, hence the reason why we can hybridize so many species so easily.

Here is a picture from a few years ago. The ray is not mine. She was a good 18". aquarium 092 (Large).jpg

It doesn't look like orbignyi to me, but it is a great looking ray. Orbignyi should have a classic "eyebrow" stripe in their pattern that I don't see in those pics. Where did you get it? How big is it?

Great looking ray. Fatten it up and you should be fine. Would love more pics as it grows up. One of these days I will make it out there to see Fantastic Fins and Amazon Stingrays. Need to finish my basement so I can get the new two 72x30x26 up and running.
