Come on guys, show your substrate (the only time I may not actually be talking about bichirs while using that word).

I am considering adding sand to my polypterus tank. I am not decided, but if I do decide I am either going to do black or red... or a bit of both. I want to see all of your gravel or sand, any color. It may help me decide. :D

Also, full tank shots are best.

I'm taking it out tomorrow. Too much of a pain to keep clean. I have had it in several different tanks, and they have all been switched to gravel. It looks cool, but just not for me.

I keep beige sand because it looks good when dirty. Aquatic substrates aren't meant to be "clean." I occasionally stir it up to prevent gas pockets from forming, but I've never ever seen any bubbles come out of it at all when doing so (I use a fairly coarse sand, 20 grit/"pool filter" silica sand.)

Also I've had gravel, and it seems to get a lot dirtier than sand because it traps much larger particles. Perhaps if there's larger debris gathering on your sand, you need more water flow?

Thanks.
I have never had it in a tank bigger than a 55. I have had the white in that tank, black, and plain old play sand. I am curious to see if anyone has had it in a large tank with large fish and see what they think of it. Like I said,it looks cool, but a PITA to keep clean. There is just no way to vacum it without sucking it all up.

Possibly. But I feel like I can get the substrate cleaner when I can get the gravel vac down in it and suck the debris out of it.You just can't do that with sand. When I say it is a pain to keep clean,I don't mean there is debris sitting on top of it.I think there is stuff left under it that is impossible to get out. JMO.

previous setup of my bichir tank

go with red since it brings out the color and pattern more ask Earl since he has red sand
