Let's See That Sand or Gravel!

I'm thinking, with my black background, the red will really look good, especially with the bichirs on it. I've always thought red sand gave off a sort of reptilian look.

Also, how big is that Del on the left of the group shot? Looks monster.

Nice tiles Fishes33!

Yes this would be a Polypterus Delhezi.

Here is my current substrate. I was looking for something that was larger than sand yet smaller than most gravels that are sold. It is large enough that it can be gravel vaced yet small enough the fish can bury.
I found the answer on a camping trip last summer. About 6 hours of sifting and rinsing and I had 2 5 gallon buckets of tank substrate. It is a little lighter than I wanted however the grain size is perfect, I will added some darker mix to it this summer.

I call it home made Rocky Mountain mix.

I'll get some more recent pics soon. Mine are on a mix of blue and black gravel, and while not very pleasing to the eye, it does bring out the colors quite nicely. They'll be moved to pool filter sand soon though.

Earl you make me want sand again!

not trying to hijack the thread but where do you get the black sand because i have never seen it where i live but i really like it.

If you are talking to me it is not sand, but a more fine grained gravel. It is Eco-complete plant substrate. I got two bags for a 55g but need probably another 50lbs of gravel to be able to actually anchor things down...
