I have mine divided vetween indoor aquarium and outdoor built in deck pond. The pictures are near impossible from the pond, so these are from the smallest one that is indoors.
I have not tried housing Bowfin with cichlids, but I don't see any reason that it could not be done. The Bowfin does have a wide temperature range that it can endure and it is plentiful in Texas and co-exist in nature with Texas cichlids.
I am keeping mine all unheated, and well out of Cichlid temperature range. They do have a voracious appetite and are cannabilistic. I have the indoor one in with a 5" blue channel catfish and two bluegills 4" - 5".
The ones in the Outdoor pond are both closing in on a foot long and are tankmates with a 20+" Longnose Gar, a 12" Florida Gar, two 6" bluegills & a 7 - 8" Highfin Pleco.
Mine does not want to pose for the camera so here is a video.
