Hi all... Absolutely beautiful fish.. I'm getting the geo bug no doubt about it. Gonna start hunting some for my sev tank.
Jamie do you have any full tank shots of the tank with the redhead/orangehead Tapajos???
Japes for some reason I can't get your photos.. any ideas??
Anyone else that can post a full tank shot that would be great help to me.
Beautiful beautiful fish everyone. Can't wait to get mine. Sue:D:D:D

Hi Jamie/Titansfever
For some reason I can only pull up my reoly to this as well as several other folks comments when I click to open the video.... but you did get some nice comments including mine.. Don't know if they can be moved here or not..
Anyhow...My sevs have selectively decided which plants bother them and left others alone.. it seems so far to be more a placement kind of thing than a plant type.. but they have only been in there for 3 months and were rescued as adults from a tank with only plastic ones.. The juvie rot sev has not bothered the plants at all. I'm sure everything will change when I get the geos tho...

When I emailed Jeff I just asked for shipping quote and said I was looking at Abalios or redhead Tapajos.. He didnot comment on the types of geos. His site lists Altifrons Tapajos.. are those different than yours?? N-E Cichlids also show geo redheads are they differnt also? Guess there are a lot more varieties than I thought. Better do a bit more reading before ordering alothough I'm sure I would like them all I really love your orange/red heads. What sort of pricing should I expect to pay?? Thanks Sue :D:D:D

SusieQ,

I don't know the correct scientific term, BUT, there are several "variants" if you will, of the Geophagus Altifrons. They are named after the original origin ex. Geophagus Altifrons "Tapajos" or Geophagus Altifrons "Trombetas" or Geophagus Altifrons "Manuas".

A Geophagus Altifrons "Tapajos" is NOT a Geophagus Oranghead "Tapajos"

There are only two types of Orangheads= "Tapajos" and "Araguaia" They are VERY similar in appearance!

There are a lot of Altifrons variants= They are just given the added name(Trombetas, Manuas, etc.) from which waterway they were captured from. 9 times out of 10, people selling altifrons will not know were they are originally from. I only buy Altifrons from people that have them shipped directly from the source to the US(wild caught). They do have markings to distinguish between their respected locale, but they are extremely hard to identify unless you know what to look for.

Sooooooo, to answer your question;):), Jeff Rapps has Geo. Altifrons "Tapajos" and NE Cichlids have Geo. Orangehead "Tapajos". A new vendor, SNOOKN21, has some right now, though he has them labeled as Redhead Altifrons(<~~~wrong). They appear to be Oranghead "Tapajos", I would need a clearer pic if I was to put a bet on it.

we have a couple of little geos right now, a small male red hump (steiney) and a balzani..will get pics of those later

Hi there Jamie/Titansfever.. Thanks for the breakdown. Now I'm really confused..just kidding.. I understanding what you mean. As a matter of fact I have also emailed to Snook21 about the shipping charges. Please let me know after you see his pics of the actual fish if they are indeed Orangeheads.

I may just end up seeing what the lfs here can get me.. I know they can get Steni but not sure about any others. Since I don't know how long it's gonna be before we move to Ct. (now since the economy's downturn, we have to sell this house first), I might just start with those easily available to me and then when resettled go for the gusto...
Whatever they will be geos and I can experience them and see if they are gonna be as fun as I think.. They might just sway me from remaking this a discus tank in the future in Ct. You never know... certainly seems like they will require a bit less maintenance as well and that's always nice.
Any opinion as to the combo of geos with the ecocomplete in the tank??

Thanks again for all your help. I'm sure I'll be back for more LOL Sue:D:D:D

Here are some of my redhumped eartheaters (geophagus steindachneri).
I have one male and three females and they breed like crazy. I have so many fry, I don't know what to do with them. The third photo shows a female holding eggs.

Funny, I never noticed this thread before. Everyone has some great looking fish. Your redhumps look great Crispy. I think they are a very under rated Geo. Here's a couple of pictures of mine, they were already posted in another thread, but here they are anyway.

A. Heckelii and Geo Altifrons

I also have 2 Geo sp. red bahia and a pair of A. Robertsoni. The robertsoni's are not really eartheaters, but they do sift a lot.

Nice. I've always loved the geos... whenever I get more tank space or a new setup, I would love an all eartheater tank!
