Gymnogeophagus Mini earth eaters? Gymno - dwarf, geo-earth, phagus - eater. Are they true earth eaters?

All these are from the tribe within cichlids, called geophagini, there are 9 genera within the tribe, Gymnogeophagus is just one of those.
Here are a few from thet eartheating geophagini tribe Gymnogeophagus.

Gymnogeopagus sp Paso Pache let, balzani middle, and the species from Arrojo Yebaliti right, all males.

although not the tribe geophagini, there are earth eating cichlids from all over the globe
Thorichthys, Cribroheros, and Darienheros from Central America

There are even sand sifting cichlids like Fossorochromis, from the rift lakes of Africa.
Interesting how convergiant evolution makes them appear so similar.

One of the most interesting facets of keeping Gymnogeophagus was because they are found in cooler more temperate zones in S America such as Uruguay nd Argentina, is I could keep the them in ponds in Wisconsin spring thru fall.

And my tanks could be kept at room temps, with heaters.

I have some geo albios but they are boring and some geo cf winemilleri (sold via wetspot); they are beginning to develop some colour and it is a bit weird - they seem to be getting large red blobs in the middle of the body (very un-winemilleri like) - maybe when they get older i'll try to get some decent pictures.
(they were around 2 1/2 inches when purchased and now up to 4 - maybe by 6 or 8 they will fully colour up ?)

This will be my first pond season with gymno stock tanks (terrapurpura el norte & labiatus rio olimar) in Toronto. In the winter I keep their tanks near the ground in colder rooms for a cold season even though they will get it outside. Roughly a month to go!!
