Let's see those freshwater lionfish!

Well I researched and researched on what to do feed it. Some said ghost shrimp others said to try and teach it to eat frozen food. So when I went to pick it up from the lfs who ordered it for me, they had put it in the tank with a dragon goby and some kind of smaller shark. My fish ate both of those waiting over night to be picked up by my next morning. I was shocked at first but then realized that he was full for awhile which gave me time to figure out what to feed him. I tried for two weeks feeding him frozen food from my local grocery store. I would try each food for a week if unsuccessful I would go by ghost shrimp to feed it.

I finally got it used to frozen raw deveined and de shelled shrimp. I fed him two shrimp (thawed and cut into pieces) three times a week and it loved it.

Like I mentioned before, on the days that I fed him, he would stalk me if I walked by the tank waiting to be fed. I got him used to be feeding by a stick, I would stick the food on the end, wiggle it then he would come and pull it off the stick. Over time I wouldn't even have to wiggle it, he would see me and the stick and be waiting.

i kept reading and reading that they need variety, so overtime I kept trying to new stuff from the store, he wouldn't touch any of it. Then about three weeks ago, he wouldn't eat, he wanted to at first but when he got close he lost interest. I kept trying new things but with no luck. The only time I could get him to eat is when I aggravated him enough by putting it in his face where he would bite it (I know not the right thing to do but only done it once just to get him to eat).

So last week I went an hour out of town just to get some frozen fish food that "they" supposedly love only to come back home to find him dead.

Advice:
if you have a smaller tank that you can breed him live food in (ei. Ghost shrimp, mollies..etc), then do it, alot easier than running to pet store just for food.

If not train it to eat frozen like mine (many articles online that teach you how), and mix it up weekly or monthly to give him variety.

AND once you get it eating frozen don't ever go back to live.

That's my tips, I'm nowhere near an expert just talking about my past experiences.

Interesting,I have a feeling they might be brackish even though they are marketed as freshwater dwellers and that might explain the sudden death of your lion.I would like to try another some day.

Yeah as far as I know there is no such thing as a freshwater lionfish

Mine was in brackish the entire time, that I had it. If I can't find a decent Brackish line up of fish for my 55gal now ill own another one soon.

So I'm done thread jacking the OP, if I find more pics of my fish, Ill post them.

Lol. It's all good! I figured there would be more on MFK they had these. I'm glad you posted your experiences with your toadfish as information is scarce. First, I hate to hear of your toad's death. I have actually had mine and fed nothing but live food. I understand that raising and feeding black worms is fairly decent for them. I actually raised guppies with mine. They made a bit of fodder for my toads. Mine eat very rarely. I also would feed ghost shrimp, then fed them to my toads. Right now, my three toads live with a Cuban cichlid, black belt cichlid, and Mayan cichlid (until my archers get bigger). Fishbase.org lists the commonly sold species of "freshwater lionfish" as freshwater, brackish, and marine. Whereas Aqualog reads that Batrachomeous trispinosus is freshwater. Again, information for these is scarce and differs greatly.

Ya, they are brackish. I had one for a little over a year once upon a time. I think the freshwater was the biggest issue. I've read a lot of success stories about brackish tanks with these guys. I liked feeding mine earthworms and whatever other bug I could find. Not a place to find live feeders around here and didn't know how to train for frozen food at the time.
