While I love taxidermy and a good mount, if you have the money, opt for a picture and a recreation, and release the fish. #2 I love the idea of a mount of a past loved fish, but only if it lived out its full natural life span and died of old age. I couldn't bare to look at it if it died of my mistake. Also, if i did a mount of a past pet, id want a replica. :)

My first fish were red belly piranhas and they died at about 3 years old with the biggest at 11" I think he was. I put them in the freezer as I didnt want to just throw them away.
I then was visiting a local museum and came across a fish labeled as a 'Red Belly Piranha'. Now I had studied this fish day and night and one look at that top lip told me it was a...'PACU', haha. I emailed them when I got home telling them they had the wrong fish and that one was a veggy and that I had some real reds in my freezer if they could use them. I didnt hear anything back for about a year and then I got an email saying something like.."Thankyou for email blah blah, our museum curator has inspected the fish and you are correct it is the wrong fish".

They said they could always use the fish I have in my freezer as spare specimens, but I no longer had them and on telling them this they replied "Well if you happen to have any piranhas in your freezer in future, feel free to contact us", clearly thinking im very odd.

I still havent been back to check if they changed it though, I assume they did.

Here's mine. I was 5 or 6 years old on my first offshore fishing trip with my grandfather and my dad when my grandfather caught it. My dad had it mounted and my grandfather gave it to me a few years ago when he was moving into a smaller office. He also gave me a picture of the three of us when he caught it. My fiancé hates it, but I could never let go of the memory.

This seems like a good thread to ask sething iv always wondered about fish mounts. I have a large mouth bass mount but its "real" like it has its mouth open and you can see the gills and tiny teeth etc and its totally different from my brothers big drum fish of some sort (sw) but his is just really fake looking like the mouth is open but its just solid inside no detail, teeth, etc. Theres very little texture on it and it just looks like fiberglass or w.e. I find big sw fish mounts tend to look this way like swordfish and I was just wondering why? Is it a size thing, a sw thing, what? I just want to make sure when I get another it doesnt look like his
