just set up my 230 and i have bare bottom right now. i transfered some old river gravel from my 100gal to cycle but i want sand i think. whats the best and best looking with my fish? post pics please!!!!

Sand or small gravel is probably best for RTC and the hybrid, and whatever for the paroon since they have nothing to do with the substrate. Sand is too small to be eaten and to cause problems with the digestive tract, same with small gravel. If the gravel is too big they may eat some and get it stuck.

cool thanks for the suggestion. actually my hybrid scooped up a fat mouth full of gravel and massivore trying to hog my paroon........then barfed something terrible!!!!!! sucks, sand this weekend.

I prefer sand as coarse gravel traps the wastes which makes it more difficult to vacuum it.

My rtcxtsn has barfed a couple times now doing the exact same thing, and a 22+" fish makes the 280 gallon system instantly nasty. Does anyone know if sand helps to eliminate this problem? I'll be interested in hearing updates on your conversion to sand. Let us know if there are any behavioral changes, or health changes.

waiting for pet kingdom to get the sand in. does anyone know another place i can get the river sand (at least this is whats its labeled at pet kingdom), ive heard blasting supply stores??

i got home today and my pleco is no where to be found???! i suspect my rtc do to the lump in his underside.
