Yeah, they will eat pretty much anything, even prickly plecos.

I am pretty sure that landscape supply stores have got beach sand, and maybe river sand, but I think you should go to your local pool shop, and get pool filter sand. Usually it's a really nice colour and very fine too.
 
i have my big rtc for about 3 yrs now and i still find bebbles on the bottom of my pond ,there has been no gravel or sand for about 2 yrs
 
I have a TSN and I'm considering switching to sand as well after reading all the posts. I would hate to wait till he gets a rock stuck in his gut to change my tank. I've heard that you can use play sand that you get at your local home improvment store if you rinse it off real good. Has anyone else heard that?
 
I tried playsand before in a 55 with H.O.B filters and and it was fine until it got kicked up. Its very fine and stays in the water column for a while. i kept a larmouth bass in it, he loved it but once it got in to the filter from the bass feeding and kicking it up the filters were shot. niosy as all out doors. it was a pain to clean too.
