bichir/ropefish are in a subclass that also includes the sturgeon and paddlefish, and are in their own Order Polypteriformes.
channa belongs to Order Perciformes, which includes a large number of fish like perch, bass, cichlid, anabantids just to name a few.
so taxonomically, the two are very apart from each other. basically bichir/ropefish are 'primitive fish' like arowanas, lungfish, sturgeons, gars, rays. Channa would be 'modern fish'.
