I too have a 65 gallon tank. It has black trim with black gravel and black Eclipse hoods with green plastic bamboo on each end. It has an UGF powered by two Hagen 802 powerheads, and two Eclipse #2 hoods with filters and biowheels that have purigen bags under the filters. The Hagen 802's have ventura valves that produce bubbles on each end. The uplift tubes and powerheads are covered by extra tall plastic green bamboo and the tank stands 4" away from the wall giving a "floating" appearance to the goldfish that present themselves directly in the middle of the tank being it is the calmest water in the tank. I have recently added a Fluval FX6 canister filter so I have and extreme amount of bio-filter available which is good since my tank is severely overstocked for goldfish at the moment. I had to double up on my goldfish space when I had two extra large tanks fail on me at the same time. I'm currently re caulking the one while I'm fixing scratches on a used one from the back yard. Living on the Hayard fault line, my tank is firmly attached to the wall by straps on each end as are all my bookshelves. I've lost more than one goldfish when they try and swim into/past a place that cannot possibly accommodate them and they end up exhausting/stressing themselves to death. I blame inbreeding as the source of this bizarrely stupid self destructive behavior. All they had to do was back up 1/4". Strange. Due to the extreme amount of bio-filtration my tank always tests 0 for ammonia and nitrite, but always test high for nitrate. Since over stalking my tank I have to change the water 4x more often than I previously did as the water approaches 20PPM in nitrates. Everyone is still healthy but I know I'm pushing the envelope for systemic stability. I have several more tanks but this is my favorite with my favorite fish in my bedroom. After my last fish suicide attempt I removed all the adornments/rocks/driftwood and replaced them with clear acrylic spheres. Even those I have to keep apart to keep from making a one way stuck zone. Has anyone else had this bizarre behavior happen to them?
