Lets talk about cheapo knock off ebay canisters...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just ordered me a Sun Sun with the UV sterilizer. Hope it works as well as some of the reviews.

Any issues w/included hoses or connections?

Nope, while the overall "screw" mechanism for the hose clamps could have easily cracked due to the cheaper plastic, just being careful and not forcing it (only hand tightening) and it works fine. Hoses were plenty big, about 3/4" diameter, the actual disengage portion at the tank is nice, seems to work fine...all the seals come greased and it's snug all over nothing is loose

I've heard some had issues in this department. How are all the intake & outlet tubes/fixtures/fittings?

Again, I was a skeptic going in so my expectations were low needless to say at 65 bucks total. the fixtures are indeed a low impact plastic but really, they do the job fine, everything came "pre greased" and fit really, really snug.

Anything you would change about it now that you have it?

in a perfect world it would have a "sturdier" grade of plastic for the hose clamps and disengage portion but this is really ticky tacky...the filter media baskets have a bar right across the top of them...its in the way, but eh...on a value scale its way off the charts.

What media does it come with?

nothing here...just some white, cheapo filter media...which I cut my own pad anyway so I use them as "templates"...these are pretty useless but who cares.

How is the hose fitting that connects the hoses to the canister itself?

Its got a "quick disconnect" for the inlet/outlet portion, haven't used it a ton but it's snug, appears to operate fine. The canister itself snaps shut using a clamp type closing system. Seems fine. I wouldn't "force" any of these components, its something you need to be gentle with anyway...you could bend them in a fish tank rage or something, but again, value wise they exceeded my expectations.

I like how my Fluval has a valve that will quickly and easily close the end to not allow water to come out which makes priming after the fact easier.

The disconnect has a lever that when you press it, it closes the hoses and dislodges them from the main tank. Haven't used it much but works fine. Pretty slick.

Does the valve for this particular filter have this?

Yeah, its got a quick disconnect system...I'm not sure if it is the same though...

Also, how are the hoses because they look pretty basic.

BASIC. Mine are at least a stylish "green" color, but its just tubing, lets not get crazy here...what type of tubing did you expect?

The Fluval hoses look/feel more robust but maybe that's not as necessary.

They should for over 300 dollars...that filter better do laundry for 300 dollars...this thing is 65 bucks shipped. If you want top quality then go for the fluval, but this, for us nuts on a budget...works great in my mind...I don't by brand names...its just not something I do, I'm really happy with this filter, but like I said...I assumed it would be a turd, and pleasantly its not a turd at all...it's a great no frills canister. The key is "NO FRILLS" you can't compare it to a Fluval because those you are paying for the brand, the history, etc. I have directions written in "engrish", it's all relative. Hope this helps!

To specify, I know the valves can come off but do they close/seal the water into the tubes themselves so there is no water lost and when you put it all back together it's easier to prime. In other words on the Fluval there's one lever that closes valves on the hoses themselves sealing the water in the tubes so when you then use the 2nd lever to disconnect the valves from the canister body the water doesn't come out or empty the hoses. That's what I was asking about this unit. As for the price difference if I HAD to order one tomorrow there would be no doubt I would be ordering this Sunsun 375gph unit to test out. I actually already have a Fluval though and am considering switching over and selling my used Fluval so the savings isn't quite as much as choosing to buy one or the other so that's why I'm asking such specific questions. There isn't much in the way of info or pictures online plus the 'savings' won't be as much for me as it is for most who are buying one or the other.

The disconnect is just for the housing that the two (in/out) tubes hook up to, the whole housing pops out and yes it does seal both tubes upon disconnect, you cannot however remove the tubes individually. I'm waiting on some more bio media for it...it should be here tomorrow or tuesday...the sun sun has been running a week now, so I'll break it down to reload, and during that time I'll snap some photos for everyone and get you some pics of the housing...its hard to translate the set up into words, but I think we are talking about the same thing...the disconnect valve is exactly like the set up on a marineland canister.

Thats a "JEBAO" branded pump. I've heard "mixed" things about these. There is also the CFS branded "bucket" type canisters that you see on ebay, but the lid is allegedly cheap and an issue on those ones. Most of the SUN SUN filters seem to have positive feedback.

also, is it dirty? Canisters once clogged suck pretty bad, no matter the quality. Canisters need cleaned every 30-90 days depending on severity and bioload...just a thought. Not implying that you don't clean your fish tank!

anyone has a link to these sun sun filters? I searched ebay and couldnt find anything besides the filtration pads for it?
