Lets talk about Dojo Loaches...

Is the "dojo" loach the same thing as the Chinese Weather Loach? This was the first fish I bought in the hobby!

I bought several Chinese Weather Loaches (thinking they could survive MD. waters.) I have never seen any in my outdoor spring pond since then, so who knows.

I did keep two in an aquarium (10G) that I borrowed from my brother around two years ago. This was my first attempt at "fishkeeping", and I still have both of these loaches today. They are now in a 55G however and are both close to 12".

Yes its the same fish

wow 12 inches thats great. Most top out around 8-10 inches :) Never seen any bigger then 10 inches

I was not sure. I have kept the "goldens" and they are far more sensitive to water conditions than the plain brown ones. I have yet to keep a "golden" alive for over 6 months and have not reached 6" from a golden. The brown "weather loaches" I have also started out well over twice as thick as babies than an even larger golden. The 12" brown weather loaches are both fatter than a sharpie marker. I have never seen a golden that was considerably thicker that a number 2 pencil.

House of Tropicals has a bunch of the plain jane brown "dojos?" for $4 each. They are nice and thick and easily over twice the size of the "golden dojos" that Petsmarts sell for $10. I paid $1.10 for my "brown dojos" originally. That is why I was unsure if it was a different species from the teeny tiny "goldens".

Dojo loaches are playful, but the most playful of all my loaches are my khuli's. I have a small group of 8 of them, and they ove to chase each other through the bubbles from my airstones and around the driftwood for hours.

I really Liked the Khulis but with My Bichir Im not sure theyd work out. thinking of getting a 30 gallon or so for some of the little fish I like. (Khuli's, cory's, neons etc.) I like the Pictus catfish too but I dont think I need any more bottom feeders after 3 catfish 6 clown loaches 3 blue botias a dojo and 2 plecos. lol all ive got at the top are 2 angels 2 rosy barbs and 3 danios... so I need something up there. but that Bichir...Im giving those danios maybe 4 months to live. lol

I think weather loaches are a group of fish like the khuli's but are so similar theres virtually no difference. and wow 12"? but yeah as far as I know the dojo loach is the same as the chinese weather loach. thats why mines name is Confucius. lol

hm. bad luck I guess? Mines a golden but he's about 5" now and still growing. I got him maybe.... 3 months ago? o.o I cant really remember. lol but he was about 3" then. hes nearly doubled in size. I kinda wish I could find the regular colored ones but no one seems to carry them...

they are raised as food in asia and get 12" in fish farms. They are cold water fish too but that does not stop people from tossing them in with tropical fish. One fun fact is that they can "breath" air by swallowing it and then they fart it out. They do best in groups of 5 or more.

they do fine with all of my other fish but I keep it at about 75 rather than 78-82 like most.

odd. mine is already about 6" now and he's as thick as like...one of those fat pencils for little kids. lol xD guess you just have poor luck with the goldens. They should be the same size considering they're the same fish....
