Let's talk about Gymnogeophagus...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That would be my guess as well, Ed... but just not sure. I can't see the OPs fish (only Dan's).

The multiplicity of these type threads is an indication of the rate of error in labeling between the origin of the fish and the dealer's tank.

It does look like more like a tiraparae than australis. Here are my two males and the younger of the two definitely looks like a close match. Btw shouldn't G. australis have vertical bars on its flank?

Thanks!

I looked at some photos (some of them yours) and that looks like a good ID. Like Matt said, there sure seems to be a lot of mislabeling/confusion regarding this genus. It is easy to see how one could mistake the two species (australis and tiraparae) as they are quite similar at first glance.

I would be very interested to see the OP's fish, as most of the Gymnogeo photos on the net are of WC fish, it would be interesting to see more captive raised fish.

Seeing the number of these threads makes me think we need a Gymnogeophagus sticky.

Its fine...I very curious about this subject as it seems I'm having no success in finding credible documentation on the gymnogeophagus genus

If you want info on Gymnogeophagus (or any other eartheaters) you can't go psat this:
http://www.amazon.com/South-American-Eartheaters-Thomas-Weidner/dp/0966825519

Rather prices, but I'm certain you could answer all your questions and identify your fish if you had a copy. Maybe try the fish clubs in your area to see if anyone has a copy you can borrow.

I have a copy of South American Eartheaters and, as much as I love the book, it is rather outdated. It only covers a handful of the Gymonogeophagus species. It doesn't cover G. tiraparae at all. Of G. australis it says "No reliable data on live coloration are available at present".

It definitely is "The Book" on Eartheaters, but many of the species we come across in the hobby (Geophagus abalios, for example) weren't around back when it was written. It would sure be nice if he were to publish an updated version.

So are we on the "cutting edge" here? I mean, this is pretty much uncharted territory in terms of the hobby? Is Gymnogeophagus really that rare and/or not kept? They are GREAT little fish! Very inquisitive, they fight, play, chill...always moving...I wish there was more documentation on them! There is a site...www.gymnogeophagus.com/ that claims to be a "study site" for the gymnogeophagus species...they apparently have terrible study habits as there is nothing worth squat on that site.
