Let's talk Jack Dempseys

May I aslo add that they are slow growing and can be aggressive. It will eventually become a snack for a pb

+1 to all the people who have said she will be eaten eventually.
I would just let her live in the 20 gallon until she's big and pretty, then sell her off to somebody with a CA community.

The bass will outgrow her, then they will eat here. She will likely never exceed 5.5".
The smallest species of bass get 20 inch +.
Just do a harem of jd in a biotope setup duanes duanes

How big do males get?

I have seen quite a few males over 6.5". I'd say the absolute max is 12", 8-10" is more average. It does take them a couple years to get that large though.
55 is pretty bare bones for a pair, I would still recommend just keeping the female in the 20 and selling her eventually, or you could put her in the 55 with a bunch of swordtails and make it a little biotope tank.

Great! Are there any tetras available that would be correct in a biotope? Catfish?

female JD do not get near as big as males, nore do they color up like a male. they can also be little *****es. I have had little 4" female keep Oscars and female jag cornered. Males when fully mature have great color. but they just eat ,sleep and make little JD, other than that not an active fish. Females do all the heavy lifting. From my experience. raised and bred a few JD.

I had JDs years and years ago. Now that you mention it, that's right, it didn't do anything but hang out in its cave. Livebearers may change that.

ya its a shame per say, male JD are one of the most colorful of the SA cichlids. They just not active and out there. My last male was a good 7", color plating was great. just only came out to eat. make little JD and then back to his cave.
