The most common type of crime is Opportunistic Crime. This is characterized by the fact that the perpetrator does not seek to commit the crime unless the opportunity is made available. To clarify, most people will not walk through a parking lot looking for a car to steal. However if the opportunity of a car is left with the windows down, radio blaring, and engine running
all of a sudden some of the previously honest people will take advantage of the situation. On the same token, when a burglary falls under opportunistic crime it is because the victim allowed the perpetrator knowledge to commit the crime (made it too irresistible and/or easy). The transfer of this knowledge can occur directly or indirectly. Example 1. You tell your neighbor to watch your place while you are away
then your neighbor breaks in while you are gone. Example 2. As a deterrent to crime, you make it obvious to everyone within two square miles that you have numerous guns in your house and are not afraid to use them. The boys around the way pass word to each other not to mess with you. Then word gets out that you will be gone for a few days
(and nobody ever takes all of their guns with them).
My grandfather would always love to say Locks only keep honest people honest. (A dishonest person is going to find a way.)
Btw, I am glad you are part of the NRA.
