Leveling a stand/tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The area of floor where the new tank will be going is very level, as level as it gets. There are just minor highs and lows in the floor due to the porcelain tile. The stand will be level and flat on top, I dont plan on using styrofoam between the tank and stand as there shouldnt be any need, I am talking about using styrofoam between the stand and floor to fill in the minor highs and lows.

Part of why I started this thread is because I just picked up a 60"x18"x24" tank and I am going to build a stand for it out of 2x4s. The porcelain tile in my house is a litte uneven, but no more than a 1/16" high in some areas and a 1/16" low in other areas, but where I am going to put the tank is very level. I am not sure if I should just shim the stand all around or what. Could I put plywood on the bottom of the stand and styrofoam under that to absorb those minor high and lows? Anyone got any ideas?

level as in a slope gets fixed with shims... the more shims the better..
level as in bumps gets fixed with foam under the stand... all of my stands have foam under them because the floor in my house is very.... bumpy/uneven/crappy

Thanks. I didnt know if anyone has ever used foam between stands and the floor, what thickness do you use under stand?

you can set up the stand and see if it "wriggles" , if it does put foam under it, get the 1/4" stuff...if it sets solid I'd call it good...

Thanks Zennzzo, I can always count on you for advice lol.

high density 1/4"... i can always find it at lowes.. its hit or miss at homedepot.. either way its the thin stuff with the silverbacking.. its somewhere around $12 a sheet.. you could also use plywood for this.. however its like 10X the cost and you cant cut it with a boxcutter...

Thanks. What happens if that stuff gets a little wet under the stand though?
