I have just gotten myself a baby silver today (2-3 inch)
I put him in a small tank with 10 guppies and 1 plec.
Ate a couple of hours after I put him in :

noooo haha!
ate the bloodworms... but woke this morning to find one dead guppy :(

haha ohh okay i bet your gunna start seeing those things disapear soon enough i wish you the best of luck with your aro post some pictures up on here i would like to see him i cant wait to get mine! i think im going to get 2 but im not sure yet

i vote for the one in better condition as stated by another member you want to give yourself the best shot at it specially since it's your first aro. how big is the one you're looking at? i currently have 3 aros, i bought them when they were about 6 inches, i'd stay away from the 3-4 inch ones for me it's more of a challenge to rear them when they're that small. aros are pretty picky eaters, i've heard a lot of people say that one of the top killers of young arowana is poor nutrition, i find that with the bigger ones it's less of a problem.

also like another member said ask the lfs show you a feeding before purchasing, if its a good fish they should have nothing to hide, this accomplishes a few things for you 1. if the fish has good appetite it's probably healthy 2. you can find out what the lfs has been feeding it so you know what kind of food to get when you bring your fish home 3. your aro will be full by when you get home (the fish will probably not eat for 2-3 days after you bring it home as it adjusts.)

that's probably more than you wanted to hear from a noob though....

haha thank you very much i was gunna go with that one because like you said i want the best chance haha and yeah ill ask them to let me see it eat and find out how it eats and what it eats thanks for the information i really appreciate it and they are probably like 4-6 inches not sure tho and yeah this site is addicting! i cant stay off of it i should go to sleep but i love this site haha one more question guys i heard that if you want more then one aro you have to get them at the same time from the same store or they will fight but how the hell do these people have 6+ aros in a tank all varying in sizes unless they dropped a ton of cash in one lfs trip haha i figured they were just saying it to get more money but correct me if im wrong thanks!

usually younger arowanas are more adaptable i would think that that's the logic in purchasing them all together. i have 3 silvers in my tank right now all about the same size and they are getting along quite well. i got 2 at the same time and the third about 2 weeks later. in my case, i dropped a ton of cash at the LFS.

of course when the fish get bigger its a whole different story...

you're right about this site being addicting, i'm just here passing time at work though

haha okay yeah because there is a store im about to go to in like 30 mins and they have ONE healthy aro for 35 so i wanted to check him out and i want two so i hope if i get him and then the other healthy one for 50 they will be okay its a big tank so they should have plenty of room and be fine with each other i hope! haha and im going to check out there bichirs also anyone know the growth rate on them? and yeah this site makes the time fly haha btw where in cali are you located becasue there arent to many good fish stores arounf me a few of them should have animal services called on them its just sad
