My closest LFS (Jack's Aquarium on Smithville RD in Dayton) kind of let me down tonight. I stopped there tonight after work to see if any rare new cichlids came in. Didn't see any. Then I saw in one of their 55 gallon cichlid tanks they had a pretty large green sunfish. I wasn't used to seeing that fish for sale at a fish store, so I looked for a price. Didn't see one for "green sunfish." Then one of the employees who likes to give me advice on my cichlids walked by. So I ponted to the green sunfish and asked him, "So, you have a green sunfish there?" He said no, that's a wolf cichlid, a dovii. They had a price tag for that, there were no doviis in there.

I said "Allllllrighty then", and strolled out the door right then. Didn't feel like telling him how wrong he was, you can not confuse these two fish. It was just a letdown to me to see how ignorant people selling the fish can be, and try to pawn themselves off as experts. God help you if you try to tell them their wrong. :screwy: Green sunfish confused with dovii??? Come on now fish store dude.

I saw the same thing at a store around here only the kid swore up and down that it was a flowerhorn. So some yuppy chump is going to buy a flowerhorn and end up with a bluegill. I just laughed to myself...

I think the problem is that the folks selling the fish just don't care about learning about the fish they are selling. All that matters is that there is a paycheck on the horizon. The folks that know and care don't work in the lfs. I have a guy in town that sells fish and he was in the hobby himself for a long time. He is pretty good, but still not as knowledgeable as most folks you'll find in the forums.

Species knowledge can be really selective. You guys may thing getting a sun fish and a dovii mixed up is ludicrous but then mix neons with cardinal tetras while a 15 year old laughs at you.

Remember, many of us are very knowledgeable in some areas and lacking in others. This is YOUR strong spot, don't just presume that everyone else shares the same strong spot in their knowledge bank.

However, I do have a low tolerance for folks that claim knowledge they lack, if you don't know it, shut up and learn, don't spew garbage.

Maybe I should start selling the blue gill I've caught out of the river here as big as someones head as dovii.

So the fish you are posting about is a green sunfish? Are green sunfish SA/CA cichlids? Have you posted in the right sub form?

Two of the above questions have the answer "No" to them. I always have to laugh at people who come to this forum and proclaim how much smarter they are then the folks at the LFS :screwy: Why not share your knowledge with others?

any time i see something like this i try to but they think they're smarter than me or something. i even tell them, trust me i've done research but no dice.
