I hate when LFS don't hire people suitable for the job. :/

They pay minimum wage, and if they didn't, the fish would cost a LOT more. As it is the LFS can't compete with any of the online stores for their prices on filters, foods and other bits. Now you want them to hire more expensive staff too?

Also, selling local fish species is against the law in OH. You can catch them to keep , eat whatever, but trade is forbidden.

Side note, the Jack's in Centerville was floating bags from a new shipment, and a worker had what was obviously a Geophagus sp. floating in a tank marked Texas Cichlids. I asked what kind of Geos they were. He said "They're not Geo, They are Texas Cichlids." Then he checked the order list and saw that they didn't order texas, only some altifrons.

I don't think that anyone's expecting "experts" but it doesn't really inspire confidence when LFS staff insist that a sun fish is a Dovii. Ultimately the buyer should have done some research and be the one that knows what they're getting. Still though the LFS staff should at least be able to identify the stock on hand . Maybe not every species, but at the very least know the difference between a tetra , a sun fish, and a cichlid.

I have had this experience far too many times. Now when I go to an LFS I just keep to myself and only interact with them when I want something. As said before, most of them don't know jack compared with the peeps on the forums

LFS are ridiculous these days I actually had an argument with one of my nearby lfs
employee I was looking at the convicts and she tried to give me a lecture that how
males get orange on their belly I told her its the other way around and she said she
had raised them before and said she was 100% sure that males have orange I said
alright then walked out.

They should let their employees log on here for an hour a day.

Having been in the business, I wouldn't want to manage or own that place when when USFW strolls in. They don't fool around AT ALL. Those cheap employees will seem kinda expensive then, huh, Jacks?

maybe we could save the LFS by providing knowledgeable customer service. You can't get that at the big box or the website. In other markets where wal-mart, HD, and target are snuffing out mom and pop, the few mom and pops that survive do so by offering something the corporations can't -friendly knowledgeable personalized service.

When I first got into the hobby I used to go to the LFS and ask tons of questions. Now when I need to buy something, I tend to go back to those same stores (well when geography allows). The ones that gave me bad info, or acted like asshats get the cold shoulder.
