Sorry to derail what is the draw to FHs? Its a overpriced fish that can't reproduce and doesn't look any cooler than similar cichlids of the same size. Don't get me wrong, they are nifty looking. But I think Jags, Festae, and most the Viejas are just as nice to look at. And I am sorry but I am going to take a dump in a bucket and put a post-it on the outside that says "Fire-Orchid Blood Dragon Empress Shaka-zulu Flamethrower Flower Horn - $200.00" And see if i get any takers. Just needed to vent.
Pretty crude man, lets keep it clean.

the nearest local fish store labels oscars as "red flame oscars" though they are quite dull looking, i wanted to buy a figure eight puffer from there and the manager warned me they can cause some serious damage to other fish which is true, but she also said if a fish like an oscar were to try to eat it, it would get stuck in its "lungs"

I know what you mean. I bought a jack demsey, and the store attendant told me that he would eat all my other fish. She knew this without even asking what it would be mixed with or what size tank it was going into.

heh i got this for 12$'s it was labeled a jack dempsey. i obv knew it wasn't a jack thought it was a tx but now im not too sure what it is. i posted it and got like 5 different suggestions. what u guys think?

Doesn't look quite like a jd, but hard to tell from the photo. Could be a hybrid.

it has nothing to do with a jack dempsy. i asked the guy what he was and he said it was a jd so i said cool ill take him and he kept on trying to catch a real JD. that looks nothing like a jd.... looks like a carpinte but they dont have huge flowerlines like that. he's grown like 1/4 inch in 2 weeks so far though and swims right up to my hand when i make adjustments to anything. no biting tho seems tame. we'll see when he gets bigger though :P

It looks like a hybrid. Why is the picture so tiny? Part texas for sure though.

About 6 months ago me and my buddy went to check some little family run ''pet'' stores to see if they had any sunfish mixed in with their feeders. As ny bro was checking in the feeder tank I came across a 3'' green sunfish in its own tank. So I asked the 17 year old kid workin in the ''fish and reptile area'' how much he wanted for the greenie. He replied very matter of factly that it was not a greenie but it was a flowerhorn and it was $40. I told him that it was indeed a greenie and that he needed to read some more picture books about cichlids to get his facts straight. He replied by simply pointing at the small label on th fishes tank and said '' trust me dude, I do know my fishes, and this is a flowerhorn..''

I went to a LFS for the first time recently. I was not impressed. Half a dozen gar when in a 2 foot long tank, and they were all 1 foot plus. I doubt they could even turn around. Also, Blood Parrots were packed into a tank that also had a few assorted GTs, Vieja, etc, which were all torn up. Nothing had labels, and many things had no prices. They did have a very large display tank with a few GGs, an Aro, and some cichs.
