lfs employees!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you people complaining about these employees asking you "stupid" questions about your fish and tanks, STOP complaining. Think back to how you started keeping fish, who helped you, who didnt. Wow the lady said about that size, ABOUT being the key word. Personally i ask that question to every person getting a fish from my store I dont care if its a guppy, goldfish, betta , or oscar. I want people to learn what they can and cant put together, and i dont want them coming back returning fish because they think the fish are just poor quality, not to mention its like selling them 2 fish for the price of 1! I hate it when SMARTASS people come in and they want say a GT and then i go through the questions and they are like i know just get me the fish and then i say i want to make sure that this fish will be compatible with yours, and then they get your attitiudes and i deny them fish because of that attitude. We are just trying to make sure that the uneducated fish people learn a few things and maybe spark them an interest the hobby itself. So stop and think be for you act like a DICK, just explain that you know and be polite.

It depends on the store. At the petco nearest me, the best question about fish you will get is... Is your tank fresh water or salted? Now all private owned LFS, and a few good petsmart/petcos will have good employees. Personally if the questions are valid, take the time, it isn't going to kill you. Fishkeeping is not a good hobby for those that are inpatient.

If someone told you an arawana rarely lives to the 20" size before dying in a tank would you have accepted that? It's true. Normally an arawana dies before reaching 20" in a home environment, usually from jumping out. TSNs don't jump as badly but die from other causes. I've seen TSN at 36"+ in a store labeled NOT FOR SALE. It's rare that an individual would actually raise one to that size. In a public aquaria it's more likely to reach close to full size.

Maybe her response should have been, "most of our customers rarely get one to that size." How's that?

She may have had comments about you to other employees after you left too.

no i wouldnt have accepted that because i have a 20" aro and yeah it jumps but im smart enough to know that. just like i know that a tsn WILL get over 18" when properly cared for. her response wasnt what it should have been but rather completely false. and what if she did have comments about me, who cares. its her JOB to have correct info about the products she sells, not just make a quick buck! im not saying all employees are like this, i do know many that are very educated, but they are the minority.

well, i think everyone should just be courteous about it all..... yes, the people working in pet stores SHOULD know their ****.... but, gettin smart ass about it all will not encourage many of them to get better educated....

well maybe it ist their fault. perhaps if the owners or managers would actually train their employees about the fish. but i suppose many of them dont know their shart either. im just thankfull i have MFK for info!:headbang2

what has anybody said that is smart ass, i havent heard one joke or anything. everybodies voice is valid and should be heard. :chillpill:

I work in a LFS and will ask a person who I dont know questions if they are buying a big or aggressive fish just to make sure they know what they are getting. Many upset people have called me having purchased a fish that was a bad fit for their tank or tank mates elsewhere and complained to me " the other store never told me this was a rough fish " or "nobody told me Oscars get so big" or a version of that complaint. Customers finding out they are buying a tank buster or chainsaw for their 20 gallon tank of fancy guppies have thanked me for saving them a big problem.
I dont want to have somebody come back on me and say "you didnt warn me" .
Once I know a customer knows what they are doing and has some fish knowledge then I dont question them anymore.
I also make a point to learn about any new stuff on the wholesale sheets and to educate the others employess in the store so they know too. Any store worth their salt should.
But I'll tell you guys its hard to get fishheads to work in stores, the pay is low, the hours maybe only part time . Most fish heads have a full time job if for nothing else then to pay for the monster tanks, lol. So that leaves young people who may be eager but not so well educated. Then it is the stores duty to teach them before they hit the sales floor tell give out advice or sell fish, but sadly some stores just cut them loose.
The good employees know the fish or where to find the answer if stumped and actually care about the fish and work to make sure that the customer and the fish are a good match.

Problem there is that no one ever told that employee to lie. If they don't know, "I don't know" is a valid answer. I would rather be told that the LFS employee doesn't know what it is, or anything about it, rather than being lied to.

I will grill everyone, and when you are a DICK you embarass yourself. I have had some people come in and I tell them I personally wouldn't do that and they say they have been doing it for years and they know all about everything and can read my mind. People like that piss me off. Other people come in (last weekend for instance) and he asked to by an oscar and I asked what size tank he had and he says I have a few 75s, a few 29s, and some 20s. Then we got talking for about a half an hour. Walking up and down the fish wall talking about what he has bred in the past (he was in to get a baby O becuase he hasn't bred them yet) That guy was really cool and I liked talking to him. Other people are complete jerks and do no understand that I am outnumbered and just like a doctor visit, the person ahead of them is getting the best possible advice and service, so it is taking longer, but they will get it when it is their turn. Some people will wait, some people won't. I think a lot of people need a :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill: :chillpill:

My friend at the LFS knows me and doesn't ask questions and we talk a lot too. Just come in, calm down, and the person bagging your fish is usually having a worse day than you are (someone calls out, they are super busy, training a new person, keeping tabs on a new person) so give yourself an extra 5 and you are good.

IDK is a great answer.
