lfs employees!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, my mistake. I should remember never to try to discuss something with some one that knows he's right.

Giving her another break... she may have just finished dealing with another customer with your attitude. It's hard to treat each customer with a fresh face and no preconceived notions.

Everyone has their specialty, so sometimes we have to get someone that knows more about a certain topic. For instance, I know all about fish, but brackish is my specialty. I know a lot about reptiles too, but I wouldn't be able to tell you the humidity and temperature for every animal we sell. I can give you a range of good ones but I won't hit it right on like the tag says. I know a little about cichlids, but am clueless when it comes to breeding, but things like that are what MFK are for. I can make suggestions, but sometimes it doesn't work. Also, people will come get me if there is a call about a fish or a reptile because they don't want to give the wrong information. Sometimes I give my friend who used to be my supervisior a call because he knows more about fish than I do, but thanks to him and MFK I know a lot now. Please give us a break, we don't all have Oddball's crystal ball to be able to know what tank you have, what fish you have, and what type of person you are. Be greatful people are willing to learn and want to help you and will be HONEST.

with my attitude!!? I politely asked her how big the fish got, she showed me a 18" tsn, and i said "thanks, i'll have to wait on that.". everyone on this site knows aro's get way over 20" and a tsn is full grown at 18" only when poorly taken care of. the bond of this hobby is learning about how to succesfully keep our fish and learning from our/others mistakes. im not sayin she sucks, she was very nice and telling me what she knows. i just wish that correct info could be given to us as hobbiests who are trying to provide the proper housing for our fishes.

I always say if you go to Walmart, expect Walmart. We go to walmart for the prices, not the expertise. You cant realistically expect the random walmart employee who may have just been sent to the fish department that afternoon to be an expert. They dont necessarily have a choice. We have a choice to be understanding or rude or just shake our heads and bite our tongues. When I was young I worked ata home improvement center. The management decided one day that I would work in the nursery - I knew nothing about gardening. I dreaded the customers who would come in with questions and make me look stupid. Often time people were rude or spoke down to me. Those people were less likely to get what they needed, special orders "disappeared" etc. Its never in the customers best interest to be rude. While I worked there it just so happens that I learned alot about gardening and most of that I learned from one book and some of the customers. I asked alot of questions of the nice and knowledgeable customers and that was how I learned. I know this mainly applies to the big chain stores but I had to throw in my two cents on that. Working retail sucks, and customers are the worst part of it.
LFS is a bit of a different story. At the LFS I go to one annoying teenager there will ask you all kinds of questions - because he really wants to know! He gets excited and will ask allabout your stuff, tell you about other peoples stuff. He annoys the hell out of me but this kids great!

I too don't like the grief that the employees are taking, i know some don't know much but its also our job to help them learn. I work at my LFS for 1 day per week and ive already made friends with customers, and actually got one very well with one customer who visited my house later that day to see my fish and we sold him a tank we ere selling

Yeah, alot in my area dont know what the heck is going on. At almost all 3 of the lfs around me they all say pacus will only get as big as your tanks allows them to get and are prefect for beginers...and that is just one example. or you ask them what goes good with another species and thye tell you to look at each fishes card and all the a's are comptable with other a's, same with b's and so on. they frustrate me alot

I have tried telling them diffrent and stuff, and actually got a job proposal once, but other times they give you a snotty look and tell you " well thats not what their card says" maybe mine are all just not nice?

the max sizes you see at LFS and what people say how big a fish gets is really more of an estimate on how big it will get before you kill it not how big it can get its to bad really and the people thatknow how to take care of the fish and get them to there max size have freakishly large fish according to them ....sigh

It is the stores responsibility to give good advice. I've said it before, I would hope I could go into a computer store (not knowing anything about computers myself) and get good advice.

We've got a stack of reference books under the counter, and the staff are encouraged to look up anything they don't know, and to ask the more experienced staff questions.

You must be patient with peoples "uninformed" questions. I mean, imagine yourself going into a store which sells something completely unfamiliar to you. Imagine what kind of questons you'd ask...
