I agree with rostratum. the cichlid section of this site ALWAYS jumps the gun to hybrid on just about every ID thread.

Yeah people tend to guess. Hybrids are less common then most people think. I think a lot of the problem is the internet pics, stressed fish, unknown fish, and unknown variations. Colors, and body shapes can really vary.

OP-what was this fish labeled as?

Completely agree, there are a lot of variations in the geophagus complex even within the same species purely based on localities.
Hybrids are pretty uncommon and all the ones I`ve seen were labelled as hybrids or just Misc cichlids.
its much more common that its just a fish you have never seen

The labels on the tank were black belt and flowerhorn, which obvisouly are not those fish. Thanks guys.

its REALLY common to see Syns sold as black belts. I have seen it a million times in Calgary

1 synspillium
2 cannot be a Texas because forehead and body shape does not match for a fish that size......I'm inclined towards some type is asthaheros

No clue on the first.

However, the second might be Astatheros. It's hard to tell with the glare, but the dorsal seems to have a tiny bit of red trim running the length of it, which is very common in juvenile Astatheros, but does disappear in certain species of the genus as they reach sexual maturity. Body shape (especially head shape) would also point to Astatheros. I would agree with it possibly being A. rostratus, especially with the spangling on the body, but a lack of any on the face forward and above the gill plate.

Yeah your LFS is way off. It amazes me that a lot of them have no idea what they are selling. From a business prospective I would want to know for pricing. So many people either make out by getting a fish really cheap or paying too much for a fish they were hoping to get. Look at how many people want Festaes but get Mayans.
I can see how they could make the mistake on the syn/BB, but that other fish doesn't even look close to any FH I have ever seen.
