LFS Gar Labeling - Please Help

Seems like it's just a florida gar after all, then?

I'm not sure, the jaw structure doesn't seem right for a gar. I'm not sure, but it almost looks like a different species of hujeta characin or something. Maybe one of the more experienced guys will chip in with a positive ID. I'm not real good at them when they're that small.

Now that you mention it, the tail also scissors out into two big fins, whereas a lot of gar pictures I see have a small, one-piece fin in back.

false gar 100% think it's a spotted characin thingy or smthin. try general fw forum

yup.

and yes, the original pic posted in this thread was a juvenile shortnose gar i had many years ago. that particular one had a lot of spotting and lateral striping similar to low-pattern FL gars.

a quick review of some of the keys in telling true gars and false gars apart would have answered these other questions quite early...note that the fish in question has a forked tail...no true gars do. simple differences like this can help ID (or at least point in the right direction) early on.

good luck with the fish reGARdless!--
