florida gar and spotted gar are very similar fish...genetically they are different and they have some minor dimorphisms... the main difference is distribution areas. for the hobbyists.. their care/husbandry ect are the same. sticky has any and all info you might want to know..

personal experiances is they are a great first gar to own, hearty, fairly easy to keep, and interesting in their personalities ect... i own 2 and adore them.

The difference between the two are so minute that most of the time it's almost impossible to tell the difference by just looking at a picture, especially at small sizes. I don't even see why they bother splitting the two up. They should just call them both spotted or both Florida gars. You have a 99% chance that yours is a Florida since it came from a LFS

in some genetic analyses the interspecies difference between Florida-spotted is only 0.10% less than that of alligator-Cuban gars, and we can safely say the latter species pair is quite different. they may look very similar, but they are distinct species and combination won't happen; although of course for our purposes as hobbyists treatment is more or less the same.--

at 2 yrs my original one is about 15" and one i picked up already as an adult are in a 75.. which atm is too small for them.. i do have a 120 wide in my basment in the process of being set up and if my husband doesn't start comeing around a stock tank will be the next tank... the sticky suggest a 180 or larger and i def agree atm my water change and husbandry practices are exhausting to make up for the lack of space.
