LOL that guy working in the store wasn't anyone here was it? :D

 That's terrible!

Im still amazed by stuff like this.LFS in my area are very few and far between and the employees and owners are for the most part top notch.

i looked up on the internet and this place has an awsome web page, great information, right on the money about alot of things, but when i went to the store i saw no less than 5 tanks with severe ich problems, and this idiot working there. so who knows maybe the main people are intelligent just the hired help is an uneducated idiot and doesnt know when to make himself look stupid by asking for help on a question he really doesnt know the answer to.

wow.... thats funny. wouldnt be suprised but i doubt it he is only 13.

The unfortunate fact is...more likely, 90% of stores don't have knowledgeable staff when it comes to fish and/or reptiles. Most of the employees at most of the lfs I go to are girls and they're all about the cute fuzzy animals while the guys are there to carry out heavy bags of dog food or cages to old ladies cars.

Overhere fish shops know about exotic/imported fish. All LFS that i know are owners themselves so they have kept some/all of the mosterous fishes themselves at some point in time (if only to show case the fish). They will sell you fish without asking (or judging) if you have proper facilities for it. They will tell you the size of the fish IF you ask.... some will warn that it will grow big (e.g. gar, silver aros etc).

When you go to buy a asian aro it is definitely assumed that you know what you are doing (or in one fish shop, the aquarium is provided complementary).

That said, i have heard some LFS owners say that the fish will grow into the tank you put them in (e.g. silver in 6' tank) ... none will ever say that a silver can live forever in 55g though. I have seen many fishowners with stunted fish that lived for long long time.... did not look stressed either.... just immobile

I think everyone here has run into this more than a few times where the sales people dont know squat. Its even worse when its not a chain store where you would expect for someone to get hired they would have at least a little knowledge of the fish. I bought an Oxydoras Niger here in Parma once and on the way out at the check out counter the OWNER asked me if that was a fresh or saltwater fish.... Tell me how you dont know what fish you sell when you either Buy them your self from the supplier or OK what your employees order from them. That right there is a sign of being in the business completely for the money and not a love of the hobby.

i think this was deffinatly a case more of the ignorant worker not the boss. well the boss was ignorant for allowing the worker to deal with customers, and paying him to do so. my sister keeps telling me that i should own a fish shop, but my wife wont let me. i would be totally down with opening up shop in my basement.

Who the hell cares if an LFS has "Smrts".... I don't... In fact I find it better for myself when they are idiots as I get far better deals on things. Who actually really does go to them for info on these fish?? I feel sorry for any that do...

I also do not know how many here can be on this thread, in gars , acting all "holier than thou".. most of you all are doing stupid things with these fish also.... Most of you do not know crap about gars, their ID, their biology or their husbandry..

Please give the LFS bashing a break...it is infantile and annoying...

That right there is a sign of being in the business completely for the money and not a love of the hobby.
It is about the money dude or it would not be a business.. Get used to it... Animal pimping is here to stay... You all deal in it and support it every day you own a home aquarium and shop at an LFS...
