LFS Red Devil vs Petsmart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When they are white they usually dont get much darker if at all. They actually in fact might get whited. You probably wont get dark orange out of those fish. Save your pennies and get pure ones if you want pure but you wont find these in lfs. But midevils do not disappoint all ! Beautiful fish.

I avoid Petsmart at all costs. I tried to trade in some fry and was told they do not take fish from local breeders, ever. It did`nt matter that I had been buying from them of that the parents were bought there. They would`nt even just give me store credit. Because of that I never buy fish from them, regardless of what kind it is.

You shouldn't be mad at them over the trade in issue. it's a big corporate run company and there's policies about things like that(contracts with vendors/supplier). Its not as if i can walk into my local big chain supermarket and say 'hi i grow some fruits on my property',and they give me store credit for them. Do trade-ins and such with the mom and pop places, can't expect Petsmart to do so, and its an unreasonable expectAtion to think they will give you store credit for stuff you bring

Petsmart has a no question ask return policy within 10 days of purchase of any fish, which is a policy few independent LFS can match. It’s a good policy as many customers don’t know what they are getting and end up buying incompatible fish that need to be returned. Not taking trade in is not just chain store policy, but many quality independents don’t take trade in either because they end up taking in unknown hybrid species. My best LFS won’t take trade in, but are glad to accept fish for free to provide shelter service for unwanted overgrown or incompatible fish.

All I said is I avoid Petsmart. I have raised cichlids for more than forty years and produced many thousands of fry of different species. Why would I do business with someone that will not under any circumstances accept my fish? I would drive that hundred miles the OP mentioned to buy from a lfs that would take my fish before I would buy from Petsmart. It`s not like I just walked in off the street, they knew who I was.

Raising cichlids to spawn them is a big part of the hobby for many people. What would be the point if fish stores never accepted them? I just choose to buy from those that see the value in working with me and that does not include PS!

If your looking for a cost affective fish the Midevils will be just as entertaining and as a pure breed.

Because it's not about you, it's about them and the fact that they deal with everyone equally using the same policy. Whilst you may know exactly what you do with your fish, from their viewpoint you're one of many who they have to deal with and they may all say the same thing that you'd say and they can't verify it. So no matter how experienced or breeding-focused you are, they always want to avoid the 'bad ones' and they do have to treat everyone fairly and hence have the blanket policy.

But eh, not that it matters though. Your choice in the end if you want to buy from them or not, just a recommendation to step into their shoes and perhaps understand their point of view.

Anyways, OP: Getting a few from Petsmart sounds like a good idea, then you can sell the rest on when you have decided which one to keep.

If Petsmart were to consider trade ins for fry of the thousands of species you breed, the decision would have to be done at the corporate office level, and that's not a priority for a large national company that sells more than just aquarium hobby goods. If you were a wholesaler or large scale fish farm it would be understandable, but one individual Petsmart store can't go outside their designated suppliers like that. it doesn't make sense why you perceive it as a slight that they can't do those kind of transactions with you

One more time. I choose to deal with stores that will take fry off my hands when I have them. By the way I said thousands of fry not species. If you choose to buy from a department store that is your business. You can buy cichlids a Walmart if you want. I would not expect them to take fry because they are not a pet store, Petsmart is. I support people that have a friendlier, more personal attitude about it and understand breeding fish is part of the hobby. I do not perceive it as a slight, just poor customer relations.

Just for the heck of it check out Petsmart`s list of CA species. What, six maybe? Want something they do not stock? Ask them if they can order something for you. My LFS will.

I'm going to hit up Petsmart tonight, I will post some pics.
If I had 3 or 4 Red Devils that are small (1 inch) and keep them together is there any chance they can grow together and live together. I know normally this is a solo fish, but if they have been together their whole lives it may be a nature vs nurture type of thing.
