LFS: USA & CAN

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would first give my buisiness to who ever is the most knowlegable. But in my case, all of the lfs in my area are staffed by idiots. You don't get much for minimum wage. Therefore I go by the cute girl rule. Who ever hires the cutest girl gets to see my smiling face all the time.

There's only about 6 total petstores in montana, and they stock crap, at crap prices! So I too go by the cute girl rule, but they are in short supply also, lol.

In the Fredericksburg, VA area I got to Maru Pets. They have freshwater and saltwater fish as well as reptiles, birds etc. The owner and a few of the fish people are pretty knowledgable. What the owner doesn't know, he usually looks up for me and sometimes prints out info for me.

I went there today - Tanks were in quite poor condition, but the staff were what one should expect - friendly, helpful, and courteous. Water and Tanks were dirty, glass was covered in algae and/or "watermarks." Maybe some employees were sick this week?

Picked up an odd Leoprinus there - if somebody knew what it was, let me know!
Tanks were mostly empty too - end of the week is when new stuff usually comes in... Their website advertised lots of new flowerhorns... Didn't see any, except for 2 or 3 medium-sized ones. (The one in the oscar tank is GORGEOUS- somebody should grab it.)
I was impressed at what this store COULD BE, or WAS... and COULD BE....
Some stunning show fish - wish I could have enjoyed them a bit more.
Guys - can we make a list of the MD/DC/VA "within driving distance" stores? I'm anxious to hit some new ones up this weekend. Name and location would be great.
Some stuff I'm looking for: Leoprinus - different types, baby FW barracudas, Lungfishes, Swamp Eels/Tulip Eels, Snakeheads (In MD), Stuff like that.... Feel free to PM me as well. Jude

You don't want pics of the show tank until they clean up their act. Almost every tank had gunk in it, and in bad need of water changes.

Everyone tell us the name of your favorite fish store

We all have many fish stories in our neighborhoods, but there is always a favorite or special local fish store which we continue to go to because of the informed staff, large selection, and/or fair and honest pricing. My favorite local fish store is "Parrots of the World" in Rockville center, New York and I like it or the reasons I mentioned above. It is truly a complete pet store. The owner has been on television numerous times and enjoys sharing his knowledge and information with you. The staff is just as knowledgeable and pleasant. They have a nice collection, but if there is anything that you want and they don't have, they will order it for you. Nothing like great service! There prices are pretty reasonable. Now you tell us which is your favorite LFS, the location, and why you favor that one. Just for fun let's see how many of us go to the same places.

I think this is a great thread! I'm one of those out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere people and have only limited choices as to LFS's. There's only two really unless I want to drive for two or more hours. That having been said one of the two is absolutely great. It's called Mr. Aquarium in Lubbock Texas. Staff is great, they have a good selection of both fresh and salt water fish, plants, corals, live rocks, sand and equipment. Everyone there keeps fish and will help guide you to get just what you want and/or need. Prices are as good as anywhere I've found even online. It's a nice place that's somewhere I find myself hanging out at even if I'm not there to buy anything. (Though I usually do anyway, LOL.)
