Any body out there here that their Lfs is worried about shopping online ruining the trade? The reason I ask is because our Lfs's near us claim kijigi is killing them. We have about 83 tanks up and running and we have been raising and selling fish to support our hobby. My wife was selling fish to the Lfs's, wholsaler and some privately. Then all of a sudden the business with the lfs just died and then our wholesaler was no longer in touch. My wife was finally able to talk to the wholesaler and he said that the lfs's were mad about us selling on kijigi and would not buy from him if he dealt with us. Their reasoning being that kijigi was ruining the pet stores business. My wife was underselling them as were others on kijigi that were importing from Asia. We could do this because we did'nt have the overhead the stores have, this is true no doubt. But it makes you wonder if someone has a tank setup and wants get out of the hobby why can't he sell it thereshould he flush the fish and throw away the tank so he won't hurt their business. My wife and I were selling for less to get people to travell the 80 miles to buy from us plus our tanks are now quite an overhead.
I don't know how others feel so lets hear your opinions.

What you do is why they are afraid and rightfully so. Not that there is anything wrong with it but it is competition that they cannot keep up with.

Sadly, I don't think the days of mom and pop fish stores will last forever. Online sales are taking over.

Could you possibly team with the lfs and help sell online so you both make money.

Not sure about the spread of big box pet stores north of the border but I think places like Pet Smart and Petco are chipping away at the smaller stores.

Teaming with them in a sense is what we wanted to do as we have fish not commonly seen in your Lfs. Many of the hobbiest we have talked to say buy locally reduces the number of fish lost per shipment as the fish are not as stressed. One fellow did tell us we got to big to fast and that scares them but the truth is they have over one million close customers where we only have 4000 potential close customers.
I don't know about online killing the stores as it is always nice to to the fish you are buying to know they are healthy.

I have never ordered online. Don't plan on it. I think it's dumb to pay $60 more for a fish you're already payin a lot of money for in most cases. I always look within a couple hours of my house an if no one has anything I want I just don't buy it. I would rather
Give my business to local mom and pop shops that can get what I want than spend a fortune on shipping.... Ok my online rant is over hope I didn't offend anyone , just my opinion though.

We don't have Petco that I know of but we do have Petland and Petsmart.

I have to see the fish in person. I also like making a day of running my local fish shop circuit. Even if I don't intend to buy anything. I could see ordering something that I can't get in my area but that's about it. Hate petco and petsmart for fish but I have bought supplies and equipment from them.

Over here its a different problem, instead of worrying about online sales, stores are closing down due to greedy landlords wanting double the rent almost year after year in hopes of kicking out the existing stores to have higher paying clients such as boutiques take their place...
