LFS's are not like they used to be....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, this is one of the reason i want to open my own fish store. I could have awesome big display tanks and claim it on tax :)
I love going to fish stores even when im not buying just to look, but there ase very few ones with cool looking display tanks, well you know how it is...

My local LFS "branched out" into 4 locations (after the death of the original owner) and now they all suffer from greedy-itis. :(

Original store - though in a poor location - had a great staff that would ask you to "hold on let me grab the fish (cat, gerbil, dog) guy since I'm not sure" and I was told that each dept. had one head that was better paid and had assistance to work with local vets and the zoo to keep knowledgeable about their specific area.

Now they have all sorts of stuff in stock but just a local kid to ring things up and carry around boxes. The "fish guy" I relied on retired rather than have to sell without question :clap

I'm down to PetCo, Petsmart and greeditis - there are no other freshwater LFS within 45 minutes to an hour that I can find.

I only have one lfs near my home. The rest have been pushed out and crushed by Petco and Petsmart. Kind of depressing.....thank goodness mail order!!!

Its really hard to find a decent fish store these days.I have to travel 60-70 miles each way to get to stores with good variety. To get my mbuna I had to go to an auction 300+miles round trip.

I have been going to the same LFS for nearly 30 years, the original owners have both died and handed down thier store to thier daughter, she has turned the store only into a money maker and cares less for the long time customers. We used to be able to trade fish in ,get credit, and could count on not being lied to.Now even the sale people suck(lack of knowledge)One example is i listened to a sales girl tell a newbie that a Pacu could live in a 50 gal tank all its life!!!The quality of the fish has gone down, and so has the choice of fish.Meanwhile the prices just keep on rising!!:swear:

The Pacu probably could live in all it's life in that 50gal. However it's lifespan would be all of about 2 weeks in the newbie's uncycled tank! Seriously, I've seen that dozens of times. Small business owners trying to make a living competing with big chain stores. Unfortunately, it's the livestock that suffers.
