Lid-less tank w/o nitrates

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not at all. 2 months ago TOPS. (bought) Ill get it LFS tested...

It dosen't matter when you bought it. What matters is when it was produced. Though I would hope that someone wasen't selling a test kit produced three years ago!

My LFS probably was. But you dont think the open top had anything to do with it?

I can read you know. Eight drops of sol. one, shake the second bottle, 8 drops of sol two, wait 5 minutes. And if the open lid doesnt have anything with the nitrates, how does a denitrator work?

NO! Nitrate is 10 drops solution 1, shake, shake bottle 2 for 30 seconds, add 10 drops solution 2, shake, and wait 5 minutes.

An open lid would result in higher levels of nitrate. The water will evaporate leaving the nitrate behind, raising the concentration of nitrate.

do you use prime or something similar.it can affect testing.

from seachem:
Q: How does Prime make a difference in reducing Nitrates?
A: The detoxification of nitrite and nitrate by Prime (when used at elevated levels) is not well understood from a mechanistic standpoint. The most likely explanation is that the nitrite and nitrate is removed in a manner similar to the way ammonia is removed; i.e. it is bound and held in a inert state until such time that bacteria in the biological filter are able to take a hold of it, break it apart and use it. Two other possible scenarios are reduction to nitrogen (N2) gas or conversion into a benign organic nitrogen compound.
I wish we had some more "concrete" explanation, but the end result is the same, it does actually detoxify nitrite and nitrate. This was unexpected chemically and thus initially we were not even aware of this, however we received numerous reports from customers stating that when they overdosed with Prime they were able to reduce or eliminate the high death rates they experienced when their nitrite and nitrate levels were high. We have received enough reports to date to ensure that this is no fluke and is in fact a verifiable function of the product.

Sorry! I did know that but when I said 8 drops I was thinking about Ammonia. But yeah I do use ten drops. Sorry for any confusion.

I don't get it. My water starts at 10ppm and I can't get it below 40ppm in my aquariums even with 50% water changes weekly. I'm starting a new planted tank setup and I'm sure that will help a lot but I can't see how you are getting 0ppm of nitrates. Nitrite maybe, but unless you are using brand new RO water I can't believe it for nitrates.
